Simultaneous Absorption of H2S and CO2 into the MDEA + PZ Aqueous Solution in a Rotating Packed Bed

Abstract: This work presented experimental and modeling studies on the simultaneous absorption of H2S and CO2 into the N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) and piperazine (PZ) solution in a rotating packed bed (RPB). The effect of different operating conditions, including MDEA concentration (C MDEA), PZ concentration (C PZ), liquid volumetric flow rate (L), temperature (T), and high gravity factor (β) on the absorption efficiencies of H2S and CO2 (ηH2S and ηCO2 ) were investigated. The results showed that ηH2S and ηCO2 were s… Show more

“…It should be noted that both absorber and stripper were included in their model. Zhan et al 50 studied the simultaneous absorption of CO 2 and H 2 S in the mixture of Nmethyl diethanolamine (MDEA) and piperazine (PZ) in a rotating packed bed (RPB) experimentally. The authors developed an ANN model to predict the absorption efficiencies of H 2 S and CO 2 and mass-transfer coefficient (K G a).…”

“…Chu et al [142] worked on SO 2 -Na 2 SO 3 systems, and similarly, Liangliang et al [143] worked on SO 2 capturing with a calcium-based solution. Zhan et al [144] studied the simultaneous absorption of H 2 S and CO 2 into an MDEA-PZ solution in a simple RPB, and employed theoretical Equation (30).…”

“…4 The methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) is the most known tertiary amine that has several advantages such as high absorption capacity, good selectivity toward H 2 S, low regeneration energy requirement, and excellent stability. 5 However, a major disadvantage of using MDEA in the CO 2 capture process is its slow reaction rate with CO 2 due to the formation of bicarbonates by CO 2 hydrolysis which is slower compared to the formation of carbamate in the other amines. 6 The use of a chemical solvent with slow absorption kinetics results in larger equipment achieving the same removal.…”
