This paper introduces an automated tool named Advanced Stochastic Schedule Simulation System (AS4). It integrates critical path method (CPM) schedule data exported from Primavera Project Planner (P3) and historical activity duration data obtained from a project data warehouse, computes the best-fit probability distribution functions (PDFs) of historical activity durations, assigns the PDFs identified to respective activities, computes the optimum number of simulation runs, simulates the schedule network for the optimum number of iteration runs, and estimates the best-fit PDF of project completion times (PCTs) without user intervention at any time. AS4 improves the reliability of simulation-based scheduling by effectively dealing with the uncertainties of the activities' durations, increases the usability of the schedule data obtained from commercial CPM software, and effectively handles the variability of the PCTs by finding the best-fit PDF of PCTs. AS4 encourages the use of simulation-based scheduling because it is simple to use and it simplifies the tedious and burdensome process involved in finding the PDFs of the many activities' durations, in assigning the PDFs to the many activities of a new network under modelling, and in estimating the best-fit PDF of PCTs.

Abstract:The lack of confidence in the selection of a Probability Distribution Function (PDF) to depict an activity duration has limited the use of simulation as a tool for constructors. The PDF used for a construction simulation should be continuous, limited between two positive time intercepts, and with a unique mode in its defined range. The beta PDF satisfies these conditions. It is recommended that the subjective information used to define beta parameters include the minimum and maximum activity durations, as well as the mode and the 75 th or 25 th percentiles. This paper presents a formulation for developing a Beta PDF that can be used in construction process control, automation or for simulation modeling.

Simulation and modeling of construction systems has been the subject of much research over the past twenty years however there is still remains a need for a user friendly, high accuracy modelling method that comprehensively represents the complex dynamics and often time varying logics of the field construction process. This paper seeks to illustrate how Petri nets, a powerful modeling tool initially developed for modeling computing process and networks and flexible manufacturing systems, can be successfully adapted to the modeling of automated construction systems, for the operational design of systems comprised of autonomous construction agents and robotic devices and for the quantitative modelling of flexible manufacturing processes. Petri nets are generally considered to be superior for modelling systems with concurrency, where several state changes happen simultaneously and where event driven characteristics are present. The paper describes the Petri Net approach to modeling and shows how good dynamic models of automated construction systems can be developed. Several common Petri Net structures and features useful in construction system modeling are described Time and colour Petri Nets and their application in modeling specific characteristics of construction systems are discussed The paper concludes with a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of Petri nets as a tool for high accuracy computer modeling and simulation of automated and hybrid construction operations. Finally, some ongoing developments relative to the Petri net based construction simulation system are discussed
