Simulation of the Effect of Different Presbyopia-Correcting Intraocular Lenses With Eyes With Previous Laser Refractive Surgery

Abstract: The Mini Well and Symfony IOLs seem to work better than the Mplus IOL in eyes with previous myopic LASIK. With previous hyperopic LASIK, the Mini Well IOL seems to be able to provide acceptable near, intermediate, and far foci for all pupil sizes. These findings should be confirmed in future clinical studies. [J Refract Surg. 2018;34(4):222-227.].

“…The closer SR is to 1, the smaller the aberration of the eye. Camps et al stimulated optical performance of three presbyopia-correcting IOLs through MTF and reported the worsening of the ocular optical quality at near and intermediate distances as the pupil increased ( 42 ). They demonstrated that the Mini Well and Symfony IOLs worked better than the Mplus IOL in eyes with previous myopic LASIK, and the Mini Well IOL provided acceptable results in eyes with previous myopic LASIK.…”

“…In another simulation study, the authors stressed on greater attention to coma and SA for better outcomes with multifocal designs . These multifocal designs of lenses need to be adjusted further in patients with postrefractive surgery corneas, which had a different corneal SA compared with normal corneas . For the same refractive error, coupling of different SA's led to different outcomes even with identical multifocal designs of contact lenses .…”

“…As commented above, the methodology used in this study was based on a previous study in which the optical performance of three presbyopia-correcting IOLs (Mplus IOL included) implanted in eyes with previous laser refractive surgery was simulated 15 . In this study, the wavefront profile of the rotationally asymmetric refractive IOL Mplus (Oculentis) and the phase transformation introduced by this design were calculated using a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor following the guidelines established by the ISO11979-9 18,19 .…”

“…For such purpose, data and procedures previously reported in two already published papers were used. First, the novel method used to simulate the optical performance of presbyopia-correcting IOLs in a previous study of our research group was adapted for the simulations of the current study 15 . Second, data from different schematic keratoconic eye models described by Tan et al 13 were used.…”
