Simulation of the dynamics of a marine diesel engine

Abstract: This paper presents a simulation model of a turbocharged four-stroke diesel engine with eight cylinders in transient conditions, attached to a propulsion system. Having an engine model that is accurate but not complicated is desirable when working with on-board diagnosis or engine control. The model presented here is relatively simple, but sufficiently precise to be able to describe the behaviour of a complete propulsion plant giving as output values the time histories of all variables considered.

“…Simulation has been used in engineering for many years as support of design and manufacturing (Altosole et al 2012;Tadros et al 2020a). Marine propulsion system simulations can be used for many purposes, such as ship performance analysis (Campora and Figari 2003;Figari and Soares 2009; Acanfora and Cirillo 2017), maneuvering analysis (Benvenuto et al 2000;Altosole et al 2013;Piaggio et al 2019;Ircani et al 2016), machinery control system development (Altosole et al 2007;Michetti et al 2010), and machinery performance analysis (Maftei et al 2009;Zaccone et al 2015;Altosole et al 2019;Tadros et al 2020c).…”

“…Lars Erikson and Lars Nielsen presented a method of building a complete model of an automotive turbocharged engine, including main components: turbocharger, inlet and exhaust manifolds, cylinder and their relationships [7]. Maftei et al [8] built a model of the dynamics of a marine diesel engine based on the cylinders sequence and the help of the State Flow toolbox in Matlab computing environment, the results were used to predict the behaviour of the propulsion plant.…”

“…The modelling of excess temperature development or overheating has traditionally been based on physical models of the system utilising thermodynamics or electrical parameters (see e.g. Gnacinski 2008;Maftei et al 2009;Lystianingrum, Hredzak, and Agelidis 2016;Pawlus et al 2017), but these model-based approaches may be difficult to develop.…”
