Simulation Interface for Gesture-Based Remote Control of a Surgical Lighting Arm

Abstract: Asepsis preservation is compulsory in operating rooms (ORs) for avoiding the spread of hospital-acquired diseases. It is enforced nowadays by drastic measures regulating the use of sterile devices by non-sterile staff and vice versa. Contactless computer vision-based interfaces may overcome such limitations. Our works relates to the development of an image processing chain aiming at giving surgeons remote control over OR equipment. In this paper, we introduce a simulation of a gesturebased remote control inter… Show more

“…Regarding intelligent lighting systems, the control of light with non-contact signs such as hand gestures and verbal commands is implemented. Research and development of hand gestures for lighting control have been particularly active in the last decade [21][22][23][24]. Taking [23] as an example, a set of simple gestures is proposed to enable the control of system log-on, illumination level, color temperature, and camera control (zoom and angle rotation).…”

“…También se han creado simuladores para ver cómo servía la manipulación de ciertos elementos en una sala de cirugía, como es el caso del simulador para manipular las lámparas de la sala y ayudar a la iluminación durante una operación quirúrgica. Este sistema permite manipular con gestos las lámparas de la sala evitando la contaminación de las manos o la desconcentración del cirujano en su objetivo [28].…”

“…Cost, ergonomic and acceptability of technical solutions are criteria provided by the industrial partner and are considered in the design process. The gestures recognition has been developed in PRISME laboratory [1][2][3]. In this paper we present the design process followed to obtain the final robotic solution that complies with the medical and industrial specifications.…”
