Simulation Based Evaluation of Highway Road Scenario between DSRC/802.11p MAC Protocol and STDMA for Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication

Abstract:

In this paper the DSRC/IEEE 802.11p Medium Access Control (MAC) method of the vehicular communication has been simulated on highway road scenario with periodic broadcast of packets in a vehicle-to-vehicle situation. IEEE 802.11p MAC method is basically based on carrier sense multiple accesses (CSMA) where nodes listen to the wireless channel before sending the packets. If the channel is busy, the vehicle node must defer its access and during … Show more

“…Even if the physical layer of vehicular communications (i.e., IEEE 802.11p) supports multiple physical transmission rates, only the single rate (e.g., 3 Mbps) has been employed in previous simulation studies [4,5,[9][10][11][12][13][14]. However, we expect that PDRs of STDMA could be affected by the transmission rate and proper selection could improve the PDRs.…”

“…In [10], the authors analyzed the real-time properties of CSMA/CA and STDMA via simulation studies in highway scenarios and revealed that STDMA was better than CSMA/CA. The authors in [11] pointed out that CSMA/CA was not suitable to vehicular safety applications and showed that STDMA outperformed CSMA/CA. In [12], the authors focused on the hidden terminal problem when using CSMA and STDMA for vehicular communications.…”
