Abstract-This paper describes a procedure to obtain the equivalent-admittance representation of a slot in a waveguide. The approach is general but it is particularly interesting for periodic waveguides because it does not require to know the waveguide's Green's function nor to properly define the ports in such waveguides. The procedure is demonstrated on a wellknown rectangular waveguide. It is later applied to a periodic waveguide and it is used to design a small array. Measurements of the array performance are shown to validate the approach.

The novelties offered by using a composite right/lefthanded (CRLH) waveguide as the feeding structure of a slot array antenna are surveyed for some common slot arrangements. Furthermore, a complete approach to the design of beam-steerable arrays using the CRLH waveguide technology and meeting a set of specific requirements is presented. To illustrate the proposed methodology, a 13-slot array antenna has been designed, built and measured. It provides a full-space beam scanning from 40 to +30 as the frequency changes over a 25% bandwidth with a good input match, narrow beamwidth, moderate side-lobe performance and acceptable gain values.Index Terms-Beam steering, composite right/left-handed (CRLH), corrugated waveguides, slot arrays, traveling wave antennas.

[1] The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, to provide a better understanding of a composite right/left-handed (CRLH) waveguide, going into those aspects of interest for an antenna designer. A longitudinal slot as a radiating element has been considered to be studied and compared with its classic counterpart. On the other hand, to present the new design approach that is needed when using the CRLH waveguide technology to built array antennas. To that end, a slot array antenna has been designed, built, and measured. The simulations and measurements are in excellent agreement, confirming not only the backward-to-forward beam steering and broadband far-field performance, but also the validity of the design procedure used.Citation: Navarro-Tapia, M., J.
