Simulation and comparison of the illuminance, uniformity, and efficiency of different forms of lighting used in basketball court illumination

Abstract: We simulate and compare the illuminance, uniformity, and efficiency of metal-halide lamps, white LED light sources, and hybrid light box designs combining sunlight and white LED lighting used for indoor basketball court illumination. According to the optical simulation results and our examination of real situations, we find that hybrid light box designs combining sunlight and white LEDs do perform better than either metal-halide lamps or white LED lights. An evaluation of the sunlight concentrator system used … Show more

“… 40 The glare phenomenon has great importance in basketball, and players are constantly exposed to glare due to illumination conditions in basketball courts. 41 The differences found between basketball players and sedentary individuals could be explained from the perspective that abilities involved during the game are inherently developed while playing the sport (e.g., higher tolerance), 6 as occurs with the better selective attention demonstrated in international basketball players. 42 …”

“…Illuminance attenuation dispersion rate is the ratio of standard deviation and the mean value of d 50 or d 10 , which reflects illuminance uniformity. 13 Experimental results suggested that light unevenness was present due to the inconsistency in the illuminance attenuation rate at the measurement points, especially after being blocked by two masks. A previous study has shown that both changing light field sizes and shapes and casting shadows and slight colour variations in LED luminaires are not covered by the current standard.…”

“…Six plants per species were assigned to the high light (HL) treatment of 1800 µmol m - 2 s - 1 (measured irradiance average: 1843.6 µmol m - 2 s - 1 ) and the remaining six to the low light (LL) treatment of 200 µmol m - 2 s - 1 (measured irradiance average: 227.5 µmol m - 2 s - 1 ). Ir-radiance uniformity was very high for both HL and LL treatments, with a U 2 value (defined as minimum ir-radiance/maximum irradiance , [25, 26]) of 0.93. Plant positions were randomised across growing areas.…”
