Simplified Seismic Assessment of Unreinforced Masonry Residential Buildings in the Balkans: The Case of Serbia

Abstract: The paper presents a study on the existing low-rise unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings constructed in the period from 1945 to 1980 in Serbia and neighbouring countries in the Balkans. Buildings of this typology experienced damage in a few earthquakes in the region, including the 2010 Kraljevo, Serbia earthquake and the 2020 Petrinja, Croatia earthquake. The focus of the study is a seismic design approach for Simple masonry buildings according to Eurocode 8, Part 1, which is based on the minimum requirements … Show more

“…It was these immigrants who participated in the work of schools and cultural institutions. The construction practices were similar to those in other major cities in the Monarchy [6,13,44,45]: URM buildings (brick masonry of format 29 × 14 × 7 cm) with timber floors and roofs.…”

“…It should be noted that extensive experimental research studies on the seismic behavior of CM buildings characteristic of the local construction practice in SFRY have been conducted by Prof. Miha Tomaževič and his collaborators in Slovenia since the 1980s, e.g., [9,10]. An overview of seismic design regulations for buildings in accordance with the Yugoslav design code has been presented elsewhere [11].…”
