Simple Sequence Repeat Genetic Linkage Maps of A‐genome Diploid Cotton (Gossypium arboreum)

Abstract: This study introduces the construction of the first intraspecific genetic linkage map of the A-genome diploid cotton with newly developed simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers using 189 F(2) plants derived from the cross of two Asiatic cotton cultivars (Gossypium arboreum L.) Jianglingzhongmian x Zhejiangxiaoshanlüshu. Polymorphisms between the two parents were detected using 6 092 pairs of SSR primers. Two-hundred and sixty-eight pairs of SSR primers with better polymorphisms were picked out to analyze the F(2… Show more

“…A total of 111 loci detected with these 99 EST-SSRs integrated with 511 SSR loci and two morphological marker loci assorted to 34 linkage groups containing 2 to 41 markers each, covering 5644.3 cm with an average intermarker distance of 9.0 cm. Intraspecific genetic linkage map of the Agenome diploid cotton was constructed with newly developed SSR markers using 189 F2 plants derived from the cross of two Asiatic cotton cultivars (G. arboreum L.) 'Jianglingzhongmian × Zhejiangxiaoshanl'ushu (Ma et al, 2008). For this study, 268 pairs of SSR primer with better polymorphism were picked out of 6092 pairs which generated a total of 320 polymorphic bands.…”

“…Cotton (Gossypium spp) is one of the most expansively grown species around the globe, and is grown in tropical and subtropical regions between the latitudes 36°S and 46°N (Reller and Gerstenberg, 1997) in more than 80 countries (Fryxell, 1979;Smith, 1995). The Gossypium genus consists of 50 species (Fryxell, 1992;Stewart, 1995;Ma et al, 2008), which includes five allotetraploid species [2n = 4x = 52; (AD) 1 to (AD) 5 ] and 45 diploid species (2n = 2x = 26, A through G and K) (Fryxell, 1979;Stewart, 1995;Brubaker et al, 1999;Zhang et al, 2005). The evolution of domesticated cotton has involved various steps, which provide scientists with insight into the role of polyploidy in the diversification process and permit the investigation of unique traits.…”
