Simple HydrodynamicModels for the Prediction of Pig Motions in Pipelines

Abstract: This paper reports results of an ongoing research project on fundamental aspects of the mechanics of pig motions in pipelines. This is a joint research program between PUC-Rio (Pontiflcia Universidade Cat6lica do Rio de Janeiro) and PETROBRAs in Brazil, and in the first phase reported here, it has been directed towards .the development of simple, analytical hydrodynamic models for bypass through the pig. In this study, only incompressible, steady state flow has been considered. Foam pigs, flat discs, and pisto… Show more

“…The pig acceleration and the pressure drop across the pig are plotted against the square of the relative velocity, respectively in Fig.(1,b-c). The direct proportionality between the pressure drop across the pig and the square of the relative velocity and the mixture viscosity is in agreement with the literature (Azevedo et al, 1996;Nguyen et al, 2001c,d;Nieckele et al, 2001;Kim et al, 2003;Hosseinalipour et al, 2007a).…”

“…Mathematical models, describing the motion of bypass pigs in pipelines, can be found in the literature. Azevedo et al (1996) developed an algebraic model whose coefficients have been determined through two-dimensional (2D) CFD simulations. One-dimensional modeling of bypass pig in gas pipelines has been extensively used.…”

“…Враховуючи факт, що частина рідини буде перетікати через манжети очисних пристроїв симуляція роботи цілого нафтопроводу повинна враховувати це перетікання. При цьому ключовою повинна бути залежність для витрати продукту через манжети очисних пристроїв, яку пропонується визначати за працею [12] ⎟ ⎟ ⎠…”

“…However, the frictional force of the pig in oil and gas pipeline is not clearly understood, and most of the available knowledge is based on field experience. Estimating the frictional force and the required driving pressure often involves guesswork and consequently, a high degree of uncertainty (Aevedo et al, 1996;Nieckele et al, 2001;Esmaeilzadeh et al, 2006;Esmaeilzadeh et al, 2009). Tolmasquim and Nieckele (2008) classified the contact force on the pig into the static force (when the pig is not in motion) and the dynamic force (when the pig is moving).…”
