Simple Fluorescence Sensing Approach for Selective Detection of Fe3+ Ions: Live-Cell Imaging and Logic Gate Functioning

Abstract: A pyrene-based fluorescent chemosensor APSB [ N -(pyrene-1-ylmethylene) anthracen-2-amine] was designed and developed by a simple condensation reaction between pyrene carboxaldehyde and 2-aminoanthracene. The APSB fluorescent sensor selectively binds Fe 3+ in the presence of other metal ions. Apart from this, APSB shows high selectivity and sensitivity toward Fe 3+ ion detection. The detection limit for APSB was 1.95 nM, and the binding const… Show more

“…The frontier molecular orbitals provided effective information about electronic transitions, reactivity, biological activity, and kinetic stability of L as well as metal complexes of Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ . 40–43 The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of L were located within mostly on the whole π-moiety of thiophene as well as the –CO–NHNCH– moiety with a HOMO–LUMO gap of 2.507 eV, which indicated the transition of π to π* of the thiophene unit. As evident from UV-visible and fluorescence titration spectra, the stoichiometry of L with Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ were confirmed strongly as 2 : 1 and hence, the optimization of the metal complex was carried out with 2 : 1 coordinated complexes.…”

“…Equimolar amounts of fluorene-2-carboxaldehyde (0.1942 g, 1 mmol) and pyrrolidine-1-carbothiohydrazide (0.1452 g, 1 mmol) were dissolved in ethanol (20 mL), and the mixture was refluxed in the presence of few drops of glacial acetic acid at 60-70 C for 6 h. 40,41 A yellow precipitate of FP was observed in the reaction mixture. TLC was used at the proper intervals to validate the product's formation.…”
