Simple Carrier-Based Pulse-Width Modulation Technique for a Three-to-Quasi-Six-Phase Matrix Converter

Multi-phase converters for more than three-phase applications have become increasingly important topics due to their distinct advantages compared with the conventional three-phase converters. This paper proposes a modified PWM switching technique for direct AC-AC three-to-five phase matrix converter to realize output voltage waveform with low total harmonic distortion (THD) and reduce the total commutation number of its bidirectional power switches in each control period, simultaneously. In order to minimize the switching loss and reduce the voltage stress on all power switches of the matrix converter, the proposed PWM switching pattern prevents any state of direct commutation and switching between the maximum and minimum grid phase voltages. This in-turn enhances the converter durability and lifetime in addition to the power density. Also, the proposed PWM switching technique has the ability to fully control the load voltage waveform and its frequency to meet the reference values. In addition, it has the ability to control the three-phase grid currents to be sinusoidal waveforms and in-phase with grid voltages for unity power factor. Moreover, it enables voltage transfer ratio of 78.86% of the source input voltage. A laboratory prototype has been carried out in order to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed switching technique.

Variable-speed multiphase drive systems have become an increasingly important topics compared with conventional three-phase one due to their distinct advantages. This study presents a new pulse width modulation (PWM) technique for controlling the three-to-five phase matrix converter to reduce the commutation number of the power switches and the total harmonic distortion, simultaneously. The proposed PWM technique provides full output voltage and frequency control in addition to unity input power factor by changing only five switch states during the control period. Moreover, it prevents direct switching or commutation between the maximum and minimum input voltages to reduce the switches voltage stress. Moreover, the proposed PWM technique provides output voltage ratio equal to 78.86% of the input voltage. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme has been verified theoretically by using PSIM software and experimentally by using a laboratory prototype.

Space vector PWM for a three-phase to six-phase direct AC/AC converter

In this paper a generalized multi-phase space vector theory is considered for developing the space vector modulation of a three-phase to six-phase AC to AC converter. The modulation is based on the control of the voltage vectors in the first d-q plane, while imposing the remaining voltage vectors in the second and the third planes (x-y, 0+-0-), being zero. The duty cycles of the bidirectional switches are obtained using space vector modulation theory. The proposed converter system offers full control of the input power factor, no limitation on the output frequency range and nearly sinusoidal output voltage. The proposed space vector algorithm can be fully implemented on a digital platform. The theoretical analysis is confirmed by digital simulations which is further verified using real time implementation.
