Abstract:The Acanthaceae family is an important source of therapeutic drugs, and the ethnopharmacological knowledge of this family requires urgent documentation as several of its species are near extinction. Justicia is the largest genus of Acanthaceae, with approximately 600 species. The present work provides a review addressing the chemistry and pharmacology of the genus Justicia. In addition, the biological activities of compounds isolated from the genus are also covered. The chemical and pharmacological information in the present work may inspire new biomedical applications for the species of Justicia, considering atom economy, the synthesis of environmentally benign products without producing toxic by-products, the use of renewable sources of raw materials, and the search for processes with maximal efficiency of energy.

ABSTRACT:In this study, three compounds, stigmasterol (1), lupeol (2), 16-hydroxylupeol (3) were isolated from the petroleum ether soluble fraction of a methanol extract of whole plant of Justica gendarussa (Burm. f). The crude methanol extract as well as its petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform soluble Kupchan fractions were studied for antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. Among the different fractions tested for antioxidant activity, the chloroform soluble partitionate was the most potent with IC50 value of 18.80 µg/ml as compared to tertbutyl-1-hydroxytoluene (IC50=17.69 µg/ml). Antimicrobial screening of the different extractives was conducted by the disc diffusion method and all the fractions except chloroform soluble partitionate exhibited mild antimicrobial activity with zone of inhibition ranging from 7-10 mm. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the petroleum ether soluble materials demonstrated the highest toxicity with LC50 of 1.27µg /ml. This is the first report of isolation of compounds from J. gendarussa, and its antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties.

This present study explored the anthelmintic activities of crude methanolic extract of dried leaves and stems of Justicia gendarussa, an evergreen plant belonging to the family Acanthaceae. This plant is commonly known as Bishjarul in Bangladesh. Five concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mg/mL) of each extract were studied in the bioassay to determine the paralysis time and death time of the worm, Pheretima posthuma. Methanolic extract of leaves (50 mg/mL) caused paralysis of the worms at 35.3 min and death at 70.7 min while methanolic extract of stem of J. gendarussa caused paralysis at 41.3 min and death at 89.3 min. Albendazole (positive control) paralyzed and killed the worms at 17 and 48 min, respectively. The study confirms the significant anthelmintic activities of leaves and stems extract of J. gendarussa and therefore demands the isolation of active principles thorough bioassay. This is the first report of anthelmintic activities of J. gendarussa.
