Similarity Evaluation of Different Origins and Species of Dendrobiums by GC-MS and FTIR Analysis of Polysaccharides

Abstract: GC-MS method combined with FTIR techniques by the analysis of polysaccharide was applied to evaluate the similarity between wild (W) and tissue-cultured (TC) Dendrobium huoshanense (DHS), Dendrobium officinale (DO), and Dendrobium moniliforme (DM) as well as 3 wild Dendrobium spp.: Dendrobium henanense (DHN), Dendrobium loddigesii (DL), and Dendrobium crepidatum (DC). Eight monosaccharides involving xylose, arabinose, rhamnose, glucose, mannose, fructose, galactose, and galacturonic acid were identified in the… Show more

“…Gigantol is a type of bibenzyl compound [ 12 ] that functions as an antioxidant and contributes to inhibition of cataractogenesis as well as exhibiting anti-lung-cancer and anti-platelet-aggregation properties [ 1 , 13 ]. Dendrobium is also rich in active polysaccharides, which exhibit antitumor and antioxidation properties and contribute to enhanced immunity [ 14 ].…”

“…Dendrobium genus are used as traditional herbal remedies called shihu in China for a long period, which has been deemed as a valuable folk medicine with diversity medicinal activities in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, including promoting stomach fluid, nourishing yin, and clearing heat [ 1 4 ]. Modern pharmacological studies manifest that Dendrobium genus have various functions on human body such as antitumor, immune-regulation, antioxidant, antiplatelet aggregation, dilation of blood vessels, and hypoglycemic activity [ 5 8 ].…”

“…According to the results, it is clear that all the predictors obtained classification accuracy above 70% and ACP obtained nearly 80%. In other articles, MS reaches an accuracy from 83.1% to 88.4% and the accuracy of IRS reaches 88.7% for the classification of six different species [ 22 ]. When two-dimensional near-infrared (2D-NIR) is used to classify three different dendrobiums, the error rate is lower than 10% [ 26 ].…”

“…The traditional identification method is analysis by pharmacist, which is expensive and too dependent on personal experience. Several methods, such as mass spectrometry (MS) [ 21 , 22 , 23 ], high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) [ 1 , 24 ] and infrared spectroscopy(IRS) [ 1 , 25 ], are reported as valid methods for dendrobium classification. These methods are reported to classify 3–6 species ranging at accuracy of 88–90% focusing on the different compositions of different dendrobium.…”
