Similar to Those Who Are Breastfed, Infants Fed a Formula Containing 2′-Fucosyllactose Have Lower Inflammatory Cytokines in a Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Our data indicate that infants fed formula supplemented with 2'-FL exhibit lower plasma and ex vivo inflammatory cytokine profiles, similar to those of a breastfed reference group. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT01808105.

“…Recent studies have examined the effects of infant formula supplemented with a specific HMO species (Donovan & Comstock 2016). Goehring et al (2016) reported that infants fed a formula containing 2′-FL had lower levels of inflammatory cytokines compared to those fed, which is similar to infants that are breastfed. Steenhout et al (2016) demonstrated that infants fed formula supplemented with 2′-FL and LNnT possessed a stool microbiota that more closely resembled that of breastfed infants.…”

“…Although safe for infants, the 2ʹFL treatment provided no net dif ference in weight, length, head circumference and other measures compared with human milk over a 4 month period 44 . In another study by the same group, infants fed formula with 2ʹFL plus GOS had immune responses simi lar to breast fed infants in that both groups had lower levels of inflammatory cytokines than infants fed formula plus GOS 45 . However, effects on the microbiota were not reported in this study.…”

“…Arslanoglu et al () suggested that early nutritional intervention with GOS/FOS seems to modulate the infant's immune system, leading to a protective effect against allergy and infection. In addition, 2′FL stimulated immune development in infants as observed by lower plasma cytokine profiles, such as IL‐1, IL‐6, and TNF‐α (Goehring et al, ).…”
