Silversides ( Odontesthes bonariensis ) reside within freshwater and estuarine habitats, not marine environments

Abstract: Otolith core-to-edge Sr:Ca ratio was determined by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to analyze the salinity-habitat migration history of the silverside, Odontesthes bonariensis, within the Uruguay River (freshwater) and Río de la Plata Estuary (estuarine water) (Plata Basin, South America). Regular core-to-edge oscillations in Sr:Ca suggest that the silverside makes annual migrations between freshwater (<1 PSU) and brackish (>1 PSU) habitats, with no evidence of marine in… Show more

“…Furthermore, due to the relatively low concentrations, Ba could be very sensitive to environmental factors such as run-off and precipitation, which could affect the spatio-temporal distribution in the PEC. In tune with our results, the absence of a relationship between otolith Ba/Ca and salinity was reported in other neotropical migratory fishes such as Odontesthes bonariensis (Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1835) (Avigliano et al ., 2018) and Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1847) (Avigliano et al ., 2017 b ).…”

“…However, estimating thresholds requires laboratory tests or chemical signatures of fish caught in extreme environments (e.g. freshwater or marine environments) (Bradbury et al ., 2008; Panfili et al ., 2012; Avigliano et al ., 2018). In addition, salinity varied over relatively short distances in the present study, especially between sites 1 and 4, which could introduce errors in the threshold calculation.…”

“…bonariensis han determinado que esta especie realiza migraciones anuales entre zonas con salinidades diferentes, permaneciendo durante el verano en aguas de salinidad relativamente alta en el margen distal (suroeste) del estuario de la Cuenca del Plata (Avigliano y Volpedo, 2013a, 2013bAvigliano et al, 2018).…”
