Silver(I) and copper(I) complexes with a Schiff base derived from 2-aminofluorene with promising antibacterial activity

Abstract: By reaction of 2-aminofluorene with 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde a new Schiff base (L) is obtained. The reaction of this ligand with Ag(I) and Cu(I) salts in different stoichiometry leads to the complexes [Ag(CF 3 SO 3)(L)PPh 3 ] (1) or [ML 2 ]A (M = Ag, Cu; A = CF 3 SO 3 , ClO 4 or BF 4). Structural characterization by X-ray crystallography has been carried out for complexes [AgL 2 ]ClO 4 (4) and [Ag(L)(PPh 3) 2 ](CF 3 SO 3) (6), which confirms the chelate nature of L and the presence of Ag•••H interactions betwe… Show more

“…The silver center has a somewhat distorted tetrahedral geometry, mainly due to the chelation angles of the ligand, P1-Ag1-S1 101.74(3)° and P2-Ag1-S2 102.96(3)°, which are slightly lower than the ideal of 109°. The Ag-P distances are Ag1-P1 2.4198 (11) and Ag1-P2 2.4270(13) Å, which are in agreement for this type of bonds in tetra-coordinated silver complexes [68]. The Ag-S distances of Ag1-S1 2.6725(8) and Ag1-S2 2.7028(9) Å are longer than those found in The crystal structure corroborates that the silver atom is coordinated by two thiourea T2 ligands in a chelated form, through the sulfur and phosphorus atoms.…”

“…The lengths of Ag-N bond range from 2.294 to 2.454 A ˚and the bite angles N-Ag-N are equal * 71°. These B3LYP/ LANL2DZ calculated values of distances and angles around the Ag atom are in good agreement with experimental values reported for similar silver(I) complexes (Ovejero et al 2013;Cifuentes-Vaca et al 2019).…”

“…57 The impact of the perchlorate and triflate anions, as well as the Fand CH 3 substituents on the complexes' antibacterial activity, were also identified, which correlates with that of the literature. 55,56 Relative to MIC values between 4 and 256 μg mL −1 of similar Ag(I) complexes reported, 58,59,60 the Ag(I) complexes in this study demonstrated better antibacterial activity with MIC values between 0.2 and 100 μg mL −1 .…”
