Silver-catalyzed low-temperature CO isotopic scrambling reaction:12C16O +13C18O →12C18O +13C16O

Abstract: In this paper we report on low-temperature CO isotopic scrambling ((12)C(16)O + (13)C(18)O →(12)C(18)O + (13)C(16)O). The reaction proceeds on a commercial silver-exchanged zeolite even at about 100 K and requires an optimal reduction degree of the catalysts.

“…In order to obtain spectral evidence of the di-and tricarbonyls structures, we have studied adsorption of CO isotopic mixtures. In this case, we utilized mixtures of 12 C 16 O and 13 C 18 O because, as already reported, 9,11,44 these mixtures provide a better spectral resolution as compared to the widely used 12 C 16 O/ 13 C 16 O mixtures. Also, to obtain more information on the spectral performance of the mixed-ligand complexes, we have utilized two isotopic mixtures with 12 C 16 O/ 13 C 18 O molar ratios of 1:1 and 3:1, respectively.…”

“…Ag-supported zeolites have been known for decades and found application in diverse fields such as antimicrobial agents, adsorbents of methyl iodide in nuclear power plants, and catalysts for methane activation, 1-butene dimerization, and nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide redox reactions, among others . However, it is difficult to find in the literature the use of Ag-supported zeolites as catalysts for fine organic synthesis, despite the paramount relevance of Ag as catalyst in many organic transformations. , The lack of examples with Ag zeolites is due to the tendency of Ag to aggregate inside the zeolite and block the pores, hampering the diffusion and reactivity of molecules composed by more than three or four atoms …”

“…Several industrial processes such as Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis, water‐gas shift reaction, hydroformylation and acetic acid synthesis mediated by transition metals involving CO as a reagent are known 9–12 . Silver also plays an important role in several chemical processes employing CO including as a catalyst for the carbonylation of alkanes, alkenes, aldehydes, alcohols, and amines 13–30 . Consequently, there is a great deal of interest in the structures and bonding of metal carbonyl complexes including those of silvers.…”
