Silk sericin microcapsules with hydroxyapatite shells: protection and modification of organic microcapsules by biomimetic mineralization

Abstract: Silk protein sericin based organic–inorganic hybrid microcapsules are fabricated by incubating sericin microcapsules with a supersaturated calcium phosphate solution containing citric acid.

“…Sericin/CaP composites can be designed as microsystems with a good loading and release capability for bioactive molecules to be applied in TE or as an anti-tumor therapeutic system ( Table 1). The drug release potential of sericin/CaP microcapsules was studied in a paper by Li et al (2016), by incubating sericin microcapsules with a supersaturated calcium phosphate solution containing citric acid. The CaP shell protected the inner sericin structure, and consequently the stored bioactive molecules until a pH change occurs.…”

“…Yue X et al prepared AgNPs using SS as a reducing agent [1]. SS is one of the pollutants in silk processing process [15,16], and large amounts of SS emissions cause great pollution [17]. Compared with silk, SS has poor mechanical properties but a high degradation rate.…”

“…Nonetheless, for BSA desorption induced by PSB buffer solutions, it may be postulated that there is competition to the membrane surface between BSA and phosphate ions. Both chitosan and sericin have good affinity to phosphate, and this may explain the favourable release of desorbed BSA from the membrane surface. More in‐depth mechanistic studies on the protein desorption are needed to have a better understanding of protein elutability.…”
