“…The histological picture in the breasts in both cases corresponds to that described by others in examples of silicone granuloma in man Winer et al, 1964) and in animals (Ben-Hur and Neuman, 1965). The likeness to lipogranuloma, oleogranuloma, and paraffinoma was striking (see Special Plate, Figs.…”

“…Growths described as fibrosarcomas were found by Russell et al (1959) after implantation of silicone into rats; these and comparable observations by others are hard to assess from published accounts. It is pertinent to the difficulties of interpreting such findings that what Ben-Hur and Neuman (1963) originally took to be sweat-gland carcinomas occurring in 2 out of 36 mice that had been inoculated subcutaneously with silicone fluid were later thought to be spontaneous mammary carcinomas (Ben-Hur and Neuman, 1965). With so few data to go on, the most that may be said at present is that we have been warned of the possibility that silicones may be carcinogenic.…”

“…Thus a claimed relationship between malignancy and silicone fluid deposition in 2 mice (out of 36 injected)12 was not confirmed by additional studies with controls and by later revised interpretation of the original histologic slides as benign mammary adenomas, a common neoplasm in mice . The claim of carcinogenicity from silicone was subsequently retracted by the original author ,…”

“…Systemic granulomatous reactions have been associated with FMAR, namely granulomatous hepatitis, renal failure, erosive arthritis and a systemic sclerosis‐like collagen disease . One of the most feared and deadly complications is the pulmonary embolisation syndrome caused by the migration of particles of silicone through the circulation.…”
