Silicone Rubber-Hydrogel Composites as Biomaterials

Lightly crosslinked hydrogels based on acrylamide, N-( 1,l -dimethyl-3-oxobutyl)acrylamide, N,N-dimethylacrylamide, methacrylamide, N-(2-hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide and N-[tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]methacrylamide were synthesized in form of fine powders, consisting of aggregates of very small (-lo-' pm) particles. The powdery hydrogels were obtained by precipitation polymerization in acetone and diethyl ether, using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide and ethylene dimethacrylate as crosslinking agents. Dependences of water-swellability, particle size, aggregation, specific surface and content of the uncrosslinked water-soluble polymers and lowmolecular-weight substances in the hydrogels on the conditions of their synthesis were studied. Suitability of particular powdery hydrogels synthesized for the preparation of silicone rubberhydrogel composites is discussed. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Leicht vernetzte Hydrogele auf der Basis von Acrylamid, N-( l,l-Dimethy1-3-0~0butyl)acrylamid, N,N-Dimethylacrylamid, Methacrylamid, N-(2-Hydroxypropyl)methacrylamid und N-[Tris(hydroxymethyl)methyl]methacrylamid wurden in Form von pulverigen Substanzen synthetisiert, die aus Aggregaten sehr kleiner Partikel (-lo-' pm) bestehen. Die pulverartigen Hydrogele wurden durch Fdlungspolymerisation in Aceton und Diethylether unter Verwendung von N,N'-Methylenbisacrylamid und Ethylendimethacrylat als Vernetzungsmittel synthetisiert. Es wurden die Abhiingigkeiten des Quellungsgrades in Wasser, der GroBe, des Aggregationsgrades und der spezifischen Oberflache von Partikeln, und des Inhalts von wasserloslichen Substanzen in den Hydrogelen von den Bedingungen ihrer Synthese verfolgt. Die Eignung einzelner der synthetisierten Hydrogele fur die Herstellung von Silikonkautschuk-Hydrogel-Kompositen wird diskutiert.

Hydrophilic composite materials were prepared by combining powdery poly-(acrylamide) hydrogel with various technical rubbers (natural rubber, chlorobutyl rubber, EPDM rubber). The dependence of the quality of the dispersions of powdery hydrogel in rubbers on the method of dispersion was studied and properties (swelling capacity in water, mechanical characteristics) of the composites were measured. The natural rubberhydrogel composites showed the best swellability ( S O v01.-%).The mechanical properties of the composites are comparable to those of the unmodified rubbers, both in the dry and water-swollen state. ZUS AMMENFASSUNG:Es wurden hydrophile Kompositmaterialien auf der Basis von Polyacrylamidhydrogel und verschiedenen Elastomeren (Naturkautschuk, Chlorbutyl-Kautschuk, EPDM-Kautschuk) hergestellt. Die Abhangigkeit zwischen der Dispergierungsqualitat des Hydrogels in den Kompositmaterialien under dem Herstellungsverfahren wurde untersucht. AuBerdem wurden einige Eigenschaften (Quellung in Wasser, mechanische Eigenschaften usw.) bestimmt. Die NaturkautschukhIydrogel-Komposite zeigen die beste Quellbarkeit ( S O v01.-%). Die mechanischen Eigenschaften der Komposite sind sowohl im trockenen als auch im gequollenen Zustand mit denen der unmodifizierten Kautschuke vergleichbar.

Current topics in elastomers for biomedical applications are reviewed. Elastomeric biomaterials, such as silicones, thermoplastic elastomers, polyolefin and polydiene elastomers, poly(vinyl chloride), natural rubber, heparinized polymers, hydrogels, polypeptides elastomers and others are described. In addition biomedical applications, such as cardiovascular devices, prosthetic devices, general medical care products, transdermal therapeutic systems, orthodontics, and ophthalmology are reviewed as well. Elastomers will find increasing use in medical products, offering biocompatibility, durability, design flexibility, and favorable performance/cost ratios. Elastomers will play a key role in medical technology of the future.
