Silicone implant to extra-ocular muscles.

Abstract: A PROCEDURE which would allow the lengthening of an extra-ocular muscle beyond that which is usually obtained from the conventional surgical techniques would be of definite advantage in large-angle strabismus and strabismus fixus. Since silicone rubber is well tolerated by ocular and non-ocular tissues, the implantation of a small, thin sheet of this material to lengthen an extra-ocular muscle is a logical approach in this situation. The purpose of this paper is to report an experimental study, using rabbit ey… Show more

“…Supramide plastic sleeve (Supramide Extra ® , Jackson, Alexandra, VA, USA) and silicone sleeve are nonabsorbable materials that act by forming a mechanical barrier. 2,12 Currently, they are not showed slightly more inflammatory reaction than the surgery-no ECM group (B), but there was no significant difference between two groups. On masson's trichrome stain (×100), there was significantly less fibrosis on the surgery-ECM group (C) than the surgery-no ECM group (D).…”

“…In 1966, Morales et al [14] implanted silicone rubber into 2 patients with large-angle esotropia and amblyopia with good follow-up results over 2 months. Experimentally, he also implanted the material into rabbit eyes and observed a fibrous capsule nonadherent to the sclera except anteriorly near the sutures.…”
