Silicon oxycarbides can be considered as being carbon‐containing silicates consisting of glass networks in which oxygen and carbon share bonds with silicon. The carbon‐for‐oxygen substitution in silicate glass networks has been shown to induce significant changes in the network connectivity and consequently strong improvements in the properties of the silicate glass network. For instance, SiOC glasses exhibit Young's moduli, hardness values, glass transition, and crystallization temperatures which are superior to those of vitreous silica. Moreover, the silicon oxycarbide glass network exhibits unique structural features such as reduced mass fractal dimension and nano‐heterogeneity, which significantly affect and/or dictate its properties and behavior. In the present Review, a consideration of the current state of the art concerning the synthesis, processing, and various structural and functional properties of silicon‐oxycarbide‐based glasses and glass‐ceramics is done. Thus, the synthesis of silicon oxycarbides starting from macromolecular precursors such as polysiloxanes or alkoxysilanes‐based sol‐gel systems as well as current advances related to their processing will be critically reviewed. In addition, various structural and functional properties of silicon oxycarbides are presented. Specific emphasis will be put on the intimate correlation between the molecular architecture of the precursors and the structural features and properties of the resulting silicon oxycarbides.

Octafunctionalized silsesquioxanes [(RSiO!.5)8, cubes] offer potential as rigid, hard nanoplatforms to which a variety of organofunctional groups can be appended. Crosslinking these groups leads to novel organic/inorganic nanocomposites that consist primarily of interfacial interactions. These materials can be 100% interphase. We present efforts to develop nanocomposite materials that consist of both continuous and discontinuous organic/inorganic phases. We then discuss methods of probing the properties of these materials. INTRODUCTIONTwo general principles are often used to describe the origin of macroscopic properties in materials. The first is, "Intrinsic materials properties and processing taken together define microstructure." The second is,"Intrinsic materials properties and microstructure together define global properties."With the advent of chemical processing of materials, one can often replace the term microstructure with nanostructure.A less encompassing general principle is that "Control at the finest scales gives the highest homogeneity, thereby providing the highest reproducibility, predictability and ability to tailor properties." This principle is less encompassing because we often would like to prepare materials with "controlled heterogeneity," ie. composite materials. We may generally describe composites as materials that combine two (or more) materials and microstructures. In composite manufacture, the goal is usually to achieve properties that are more than the sum of the properties of the individual components; however, it is often possible to estimate the properties of typical composites using the rule of mixtures. The utility of the rule of mixtures in predicting properties is greatly diminished when applied to nanocomposites.

The thermodynamics of the oxidation of three-high temperature ZrB 2-based ceramics (ZrB 2-TiB 2 , ZrB 2-SiC and ZrB 2-B 4 C) has been studied in order to find the stability domain of zirconium diboride, in terms of temperature, partial pressure of oxygen and composition, in which it is protected against oxidation. In the case of the ZrB 2-TiB 2 binary system, a plot of log p O 2 vs. 1/T in the temperature range of 500-2000 K and another plot of p O 2 (×10 14) vs. x TiB 2 for T = 2000 K are made taking into account the two-extreme possibilities of no solubility and 100% solid solubility between ZrB 2 and TiB 2 , respectively. A plot of log p CO vs. log p O 2 is made for 1773 K for the systems ZrB 2-SiC and ZrB 2-B 4 C. It was found that the ZrB 2-TiB 2 ceramics does not have sufficient oxidation resistance in the temperature range of 500-2000 K. ZrB 2 of ZrB 2-SiC ceramics can be protected under 1 atmosphere oxygen or in air if the liquid borosilicate (with the chosen composition, 70% B 2 O 3-30% SiO 2), which is an intermediate product, provides a kinetic barrier to the continuation of oxidation by forming an impervious layer on the exposed surfaces. In contrast, the ZrB 2-B 4 C ceramics does not produce the borosilicate upon oxidation. In view of the volatility of pure liquid B 2 O 3 , it is recommended that the ZrB 2-B 4 C ceramics can be used at a lower temperature, perhaps below 1373 K, when the vapour pressure of B 2 O 3 is significantly small.
