Silica-Zirconia Coatings Produced by Dipping and EPD from Colloidal Sol–Gel Suspensions

Abstract: Abstract. SiO 2 -ZrO 2 sols have been prepared via acid catalysis using a commercial colloidal suspension of zirconia and two silica alkoxides; tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES). Suspensions with 10, 15 and 25-mol% of ZrO 2 were prepared. The stability of the suspensions was followed by rheological measurements showing that the amount of water incorporated with the colloidal suspension is the factor that limits the maximum ZrO 2 content. Coatings have been prepared by dipping using the … Show more

“…Sol-gel processing combined with EPD has also been developed for production of SiC whisker reinforced zirconia composites of high microstructural homogeneity. 90 In a recent investigation devoted to production of biphasic SiO 2 -ZrO 2 coatings on stainless steel by sol-gel EPD, Castro et al 91 prepared sols via acid catalysis using a commercial colloidal suspension of zirconia and two silica alkoxides; tetraethoxysilane TEOS and methyltriethoxysilane MTES. Suspensions with 10, 15 and 25 molಚ of ZrO 2 were prepared.…”

“…Glass-ceramic and ceramic coatings for anticorrosive protection are of great interest last decade [1,2]. Sol-gel deposition via dipping with following lowtemperature formation of homogeneous transparent films is one of the effective methods of coatings applying over metal surface [3][4][5]. However the thickness of obtained coatings from colloid solutions does not exceed 2 mcm [6].…”
