Silencing the nosocomial pathogen Serratia marcescens by glyceryl trinitrate

Abstract: BackgroundQuorum sensing is a cell-to-cell communication system in bacteria that controls the production of virulence factors. Serratia marcescens is a causative agent of hospital-acquired infections that shows high resistance to antibiotics. This makes the treatment of these infections difficult. Quorum sensing regulates the production of virulence factors of S. marcescens such as prodigiosin, protease, swimming and swarming motilities and formation of biofilms. Inhibition of quorum sensing may be an alternat… Show more

“…Moreover, using FDA approved drug saves the high costs and shortens the long development times to produce new antimicrobials or virulence inhibitors33. Our previous studies showed that GTN is a potent inhibitor of quorum sensing and virulence in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens 34,35. The rationale of repurposing drugs for use as anti-virulence agents against Stapylococcus aureus was previously reported.…”

“…For example, Abbas and coworkers [59] showed that diclofenac sodium was able to inhibit the virulence of S. aureus. In addition, it was reported that GTN reduced several virulence factors in S. aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens [32,75,76]. To our knowledge, our study is the first study that investigate the EPI activity of diclofenac, domperidone and GTN.…”

“…Nevertheless, South African Grade 8 learners are engaging in risky sexual behaviour and require sexual and reproduction education programmes tailored to the age group 21 . Adolescents require sexual negotiation sklls, improved sexual decision making and the ability to critically examine social scripts and peer pressures 10 , 16 .…”

“…Various interventions, such as HIV counselling and testing (HCT) and the LoveLife education programme have been proposed at global, national and school level but they have been ineffective due to stigmatisation and the prospect of a positive HIV outcome (Department of Health and Department of Basic Education, 2012). Many adolescents, who remain untested, are not receiving counselling and are engaging in risky behaviour that cause transmission of HIV 10 . Gender power imbalances (associated with significantly older partners in particular), early sexual debut, barriers to contraceptive use, misinformation on sexual health matters and lack of parental support at home also increase the risk of teenage pregnancies 11 .…”
