Significant correlation of TLR4 expression with the clinicopathological features of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast

Abstract: Toll-like receptor 4 belongs to the family of pattern recognition receptors and is therefore an important part of innate immunity. Since the last decade, Toll-like receptors (TLRs) have gained much interest in cancer research due to their role in tumor progression. However, there is scarcity of data evaluating TLR4 expression in different cell populations of tumor in relation to clinicopathological parameters of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. Therefore, we investigated TLR4 expression in 50 primary i… Show more

“…Interestingly, the presence of a higher level of TLR-4 protein in breast cancer tissue supports previous studies reporting an overexpression of TLR-4 in various types of cancers, including gastric cancer,42 breast cancer,40,41,43 colon cancer,38,43 and ovarian cancer 44. Higher TLR-4 expression was also shown to be significantly associated with invasive ductal carcinoma, one of the most common types of breast cancer 45. Evidence has demonstrated that TLR-4 activation promotes tumor cell adhesion and metastasis 46,47.…”

“…Constitutive expression of some TLR4 genetic variants has also been linked to cancer (2832). These characteristics are therefore being considered for their prognostic value in cancer treatment (3234). In these scenarios of established cancer, TLR4 facilitates an environment that is suitable for continued cancer cell proliferation.…”

“…An immunohistochemical study on clinical carcinomas showed a significant association of high TLR-4 expression with local cancer proliferation and lymph node metastasis 142. A total of 74 breast carcinomas were collected from patients to study the clinical relevance of TLRs in breast cancer.…”
