Significant association between RETN genetic polymorphisms and alcohol‐induced osteonecrosis of femoral head

Abstract: Background Alcohol‐induced osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH) is a complex disease and genetic factors are one of the causes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of RETN (resistin; OMIM: 605565) and LDLR (low density lipoprotein receptor; OMIM: 606945) polymorphisms on the risk of alcohol‐induced ONFH in Chinese Han population. Methods A case–control study including 201 patients and 201 controls was designed. Seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in RETN gene and four SNPs in LDLR … Show more

“…Motomura et al [12] found that plasma TG level and LDL increase were associated with increased risk of steroidinduced ONFH. Our previous study on alcohol-induced ONFH found that TC / HDL was statistically signi cant compared with the control group [18]. Our study found that decreased TC levels and increased LDL levels increased the risk of avascular ONFH.…”

“…Nevertheless, it has been found in clinical practice that only some people who drink excessively suffer from femoral head necrosis, which suggested that genetic susceptibility may contribute to the occurrence of alcoholic ONFH. Meanwhile, a large number of reports confirmed that genetic variants were related to alcoholic ONFH predisposition (6)(7)(8).…”

“…According to statistics in China, 30.7% of ONFH cases are caused by alcohol [11]. Thereinto, genetic polymorphisms of some genes played critical roles in the occurrence of alcohol-induced ONFH [12][13][14][15][16][17], such as MMP20, RETN, ApoB, ApoA1, NOS3.…”
