“…39 Consistent with these reports, we found that the lymphocyte count was the strongest independent predictor of long-term death after AMI. Conversely, Huang and colleagues 29 did not find a significant correlation between lymphocyte count and MACE in ACS patients, although the count did predict stenosis greater than 75% on coronary angiography. This discrepancy with the current study could result from different outcomes (MACE vs death), inclusion criteria (ACS vs AMI), and smaller study groups that precluded statistical significance.…”

“…26 In a systematic review, including 21 studies and more than 34,000 patients, a signif icant relationship between clinical outcomes and neutrophils, measured as abso- 27 More specifically, several investigators showed that neutrophils measured within 24 hours after symptom onset were long-term predictors of death after AMI and ACS. [27][28][29] Conversely, Zouridakis and associates 30 found no correlation between neutrophils and clinical outcomes (death after hospital discharge meshed with other clinical outcomes). In the current study, an increased neutrophil count (especially in Q4) was associated with higher long-term mortality rates in the univariate analysis, but not in the multivariate analysis.…”

“…The change in blood leukocyte counts signifies an immune response to unfavourable or abnormal situations [41]. Several studies have previously reported an association between leukocyte counts and cardiovascular disease [42], but now also peptic ulceration [43]. Besides, the neutrophil to lymphocyte count ratio (NLR) is now being regarded as a useful and reliable parameter for assessing some clinical problems ranging from cardiovascular events to cancer [44].…”

“…Monocyte count may predict the severity of atherosclerotic stenosis and coronary plaque progression in acute coronary syndromes [41,55]. Moreover, Waterhouse et al (2008) suggested that of all white blood cell types, monocyte count has the strongest positive and independent relationship with CAD risk in asymptomatic adults [56].…”

“…Several studies showed that high neutrophil count or neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio is associated with coronary stenosis, and may predict CAD and major adverse cardiac events such as myocardial infarction [37][38][39][40][41][42]. Neutrophil activation is widely observed in unstable angina [43,44], however, the state of neutrophils in stable angina pectoris patients appears to be controversial [31,45] and requires more investigation.…”
