Significance of vascular endothelial growth factor expression in skin melanoma

Abstract: Melanomas show a higher level of VEGF expression. Nodular and acral lentiginous types of melanoma show a high level of VEGF expression, while superficial spreading melanoma shows a lower level of VEGF expression. Melanomas in higher-stage disease (Breslow, Clark, pTNM) show a higher level of VEGF expression.

“…The highest percentage of patients with histological stage pT1a demonstrated greatest intensity of VEGF staining, whereas the maximum value of the average level of VEGF staining was detected, in decreasing order, in patients with stage pT2a, pT3b and pT4b. In the study of Gajanin et al 11 the most intensive staining for VEGF was detected in patients with pT3b / pT4b histological stage. They found a significant difference in the intensity of expression of VEGF staining in patients with melanomas in different pT stages (p < 0.05).…”

“…The role of VEGF in metastatic melanoma has been the main focus of research in recent years [11][12][13][14][15] . It has been shown that VEGF stimulates tumor angiogenesis in autocrine and paracrine fashion.…”

“…The underexpression of CCND1 and RAC1 , which are generally overexpressed in neoplasms, in the datasets under study might indicate that these genes were not associated with leukemogenesis in the patient samples used for the expression study. Although most cancers show high expression levels of VEGF , in some cancers such as benign forms of melanoma [71] and in cancers with high microsatellite instability [72] lower expression of VEGFA are associated with better prognosis. The underexpression of VEGFA in the T-ALL datasets examined may also be indicative of favorable prognosis in the T-ALL patients.…”

“…The magnitude of the control clearly indicated a synergestic rather than an additive effect of the combined radiation + As 2 O 3 , thus suggested that when used as a radiosensitizer, As 2 O 3 can significantly improve the therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, we explored the possible mechanisms of radiosensitization involving VEGF and Ku70, two molecular markers known to affect radiosensitivity [26][27][28][29][30][31][32]. The molecular mechanisms of the radiosensitization effect of As 2 O 3 were elucidated by evaluating the expression of VEGF and Ku70 with RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.…”

“…The molecular mechanisms of the radiosensitization effect of As 2 O 3 were elucidated by evaluating the expression of VEGF and Ku70 with RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. VEGF plays a significant part in the formation of the tumor blood vessels and stimulates the growth and metastasis of tumor [26,27]. Elevated serum VEGF levels are associated with poor response and a shorter time to progression in patients with cervical cancer treated with radiotherapy [28].…”
