Significance of serum Myostatin in hemodialysis patients

Abstract: BackgroundMalnutrition and muscle wasting are common in haemodialysis (HD) patients. Their pathogenesis is complex and involves many molecules including Myostatin (Mstn), which acts as a negative regulator of skeletal muscle. The characterisation of Mstn as a biomarker of malnutrition could be useful in the prevention and management of this condition. Previous studies have reported no conclusive results on the actual relationship between serum Mstn and wasting and malnutrition. So, in this study, we evaluated … Show more

“…These parameters were associated with first-year mortality in univariate analysis but their effect was non-significant when adjusted for prealbumin [30]. Similar results were obtained in a subsequent study [31]. The use of a single marker may not be sufficient.…”

“…It seems unclear how chronic hemodialysis (HD) and its method affect serum myostatin levels. Contrary to research by Koyun et al, presenting an elevated serum myostatin level in chronic hemodialysis patients compared to healthy controls [ 91 ], two other studies showed no difference between these groups [ 181 , 182 ]. Esposito et al, noticed a significant decrease of plasma myostatin (associated by the authors with improvement of malnutrition status) after online hemodiafiltration (HDF) with no changes after bicarbonate hemodialysis (BHD) [ 181 ], while further studies showed a significant and comparable decrease of plasma myostatin levels after HD and HDF, and HDF and BHD, accordingly [ 84 , 182 ].…”

“…[ 4,5,[29][30][31]. Furthermore, serum myostatin is increased in sarcopenia associated with end-stage renal disease [6,7]. Our study included a whole-body estimate of muscle mass from bioimpedance and direct quantification of left quadriceps muscle volume.…”

“…Absence or blockage of myostatin increases muscle mass and reduces adipose tissue volume [1,4]. However, these functions of myostatin have mainly been investigated in mouse models and human subjects with specific genetic mutations or severe concomitant conditions, such as end-stage renal disease [1,[4][5][6][7]. Data from healthy human subjects is still inconclusive.…”
