Significance of HBV NAT Among HBs Antigen–Negative Blood Donors in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: The frequency of HBV DNA in blood donors who tested seronegative was low. This finding may indicate the significance of the HBV NAT technique in reducing the residual risk of transfusion-transmitted HBV infection.

“…OBI has the following clinical implications: (i) HBV transmission by transfusion of blood products or by liver transplantation, (ii) HBV reactivation with consequent development of hepatitis B, as in cases undergoing potent immune-suppressive or chemotherapeutic therapies. Whereas, NAT for HBV has become a routine part of blood-donor infectious-disease screening in other parts of the world, developing countries such as Kenya still lag behind ( 100 ). In our review, only two out of the fifty studies examined HBV DNA by real-time PCR in the HBsAg negative population ( 65 , 76 ).…”

“…NAT positive results along with anti-HBc highlights the use of both these markers to eliminate any potential risk of HBV transmission thorough blood transfusion. The importance of NAT utilization in donor screening has been authenticated by several studies [ 16 , 31 ]. This study shows that the results of positive HBV, within 2 years period, did not show any difference.…”

“…These screening tests based on the measurement of HBV specific antigen and antibodies found in specimens, are performed to determine acute or chronic and current or past infections [8]. However, drug resistance mutations, occult infections as well as low level of HBsAg and viral load values during window period of HBV infections may be undetectable by using one or combination of these serological tests [9][10][11][12]. To validate HBV infection and follow up the chronic patients, nucleic acid-based detection assays that quantify viral HBV DNA, determine drug resistance mutations, occult and window period HBV infections in clinical samples, have been widely employed [11,12].…”
