Sick Building Syndrome and Other Building-Related Illnesses

Abstract: Outbreaks of building-related illnesses, collectively termed as sick building syndrome (SBS) among building occupants reported in the recent decades, draw remarkable resemblance to early events of epidemic hysteria. Tarantism, the dancing mania of peasant women (animal-like squealing, obscene shouting, laughing, or weeping) during the fifteenth to seventeenth century, St. John's or St. Vitus' dances in Northern Europe, the hysterical fits of women due to smells from hemp steeped in water (Ramazzini 1713), indu… Show more

“…Modern buildings are designed to be airtight, eliminating natural ventilation as they are controlled by heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems that recirculate a high percentage of the air with minimal fresh air replacement, maintaining constant IAQ across seasons [10][11][12]. HVAC systems have a critical role in keeping people inside buildings comfortable and healthy, and they are intended to provide an air supply to the room and have an exhaust system to remove dirty air from indoor spaces [13].…”

“…The immediate effects of indoor pollution include allergic effects, headaches, dizziness and fatigue, but the effects of long-term exposure can lead to serious respiratory illness, heart disease and even cancer. Nag presents in detail the diseases caused by pollution inside buildings [1] and introduces the term "Sick Building Syndrome" (SBS) as an epidemic of diseases caused by life inside a building. This term describes several serious health problems that have been rising in cities around the world for decades.…”

“…The photocatalytic purification of air from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been an interesting subject of study for many research groups [1][2][3]. One of the targets is improvement of the quality of indoor air by reducing the amount of VOCs, which can be responsible for symptoms called "sick building syndrome" [4].…”
