Shrinking the malaria map: progress and prospects

Abstract: SummaryIn the past 150 years, roughly half of the countries in the world eliminated malaria. Nowadays, there are 99 endemic countries—67 are controlling malaria and 32 are pursuing an elimination strategy. This four-part Series presents evidence about the technical, operational, and financial dimensions of malaria elimination. The first paper in this Series reviews definitions of elimination and the state that precedes it: controlled low-endemic malaria. Feasibility assessments are described as a crucial step … Show more

“…1,2 In recent years, substantial progress has been made in reducing the regional malaria burden; several countries have entered the malaria preelimination and elimination phases. 3 This success is attributed, in part, to the deployment of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in malaria-endemic countries. However, the recent emergence and/or spread of artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum in parts of GMS pose a serious threat to regional malaria control and elimination campaign.…”

“…The former was successfully eliminated together with a significant reduction of P. vivax cases in the early 1990s (Sleigh et al, 1998;Lu et al, 2014). The global malaria incidence decreased by 17% between 2000 and 2010 (Feachem et al, 2010;WHO, 2012) and the trend has been similar in P.R. China.…”
