Should few retrieved oocytes be as an indication for intracytoplasmic sperm injection?

Abstract: Abstract:Objective: To reevaluate whether relatively few oocytes obtained in one cycle are an indication for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Methods: A total of 406 cycles with three or fewer retrieved oocytes performed in 396 non-male infertile couples were retrospectively reviewed. Cycles were classified into three groups by different fertilization techniques: the in vitro fertilization (IVF) group, insemination with conventional IVF; the ICSI group, insemination with ICSI though semen parameters we… Show more

“…Kim et al suggested no difference in implantation and fertilization rates between the IVF and ICSI procedures (Kim et al, 2007). The same results were observed by Xi and associates (Xi et al, 2012). Consistent with our study, Bhattacharya et al argued that ICSI is only more effective for severe male infertility and it has no better effect on female infertility than IVF (Bhattacharya et al, 2001).…”

“…As rescue ICSI was performed for patients with <4 retrieved oocytes was only carried out in groups 1 and 3 (when the IVF rate was >33%), and some studies reported that rescue ICSI performed in these groups will not produce good treatment outcomes (Xi et al, 2012); therefore, cycles with <4 retrieved oocytes were not included in the grouping. For all the 313 cycles analysed in this study, the samples had >4 retrieved oocytes, were gathered in our centre from 2011 to 2013, had a conventional IVF rate of <50%, and underwent rescue ICSI.…”

“…The methods for sperm preparation, IVF and embryo culture have been described previously (Zhu et al, 2011b;Xi et al, 2012). Briefly, oocytes and embryos were cultured in sequential embryo culture media.…”
