Shortening the Xerostomia Inventory

Abstract: Objectives To determine the validity and properties of the Summated Xerostomia Inventory-Dutch Version in samples from Australia, The Netherlands, Japan and New Zealand. Study design Six cross-sectional samples of older people from The Netherlands (N = 50), Australia (N = 637 and N = 245), Japan (N = 401) and New Zealand (N = 167 and N = 86). Data were analysed using the Summated Xerostomia Inventory-Dutch Version. Results Almost all data-sets revealed a single extracted factor which explained about half o… Show more

“…SXI was derived from the Xerostomia Inventory (XI), an 11‐item summated rating scale that was developed by Thomson et al and has been shown to have acceptable concurrent validity and temporal stability . The SXI consists of 5 items more directly related to xerostomia than the longer version and was validated for clinical and epidemiologic research when tested in samples from the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia and Japan …”

“…XI score was calculated by the addition of the individual scores of the 11 items in the XI. SXI score was calculated by the addition of the individual scores of 5 items of XI after the responses for individual questions were reduced to three levels . The pre‐intervention scores were subtracted from the post‐intervention scores to calculate the change scores for both XI and SXI scores.…”

“…The incidence of xerostomia was assessed by means of the Summated Xerostomia Inventory (the Dutch version) at 1 month and 12 months after radioactive iodine ablation . This is a 5‐item summated rating scale, combining the responses to 5 individual items into a single scale score, which represents the severity of xerostomia.…”

“…Patients who had XI score larger than five will be diagnosed with xerostomia. Hence, according to the XI, the more the patient had a feeling of xerostomia, the higher the xerostomia score wold be, which range beetween 5-15 [12]. For QoL, we used the QoL qestionnaire published by Dirix et al In that study, 15 questions evaluated QoL with Likert scale, as follows: 1: not at al; 2: a little; 3: moderately; 4: quite a lot; and 5: very much.…”
