Short-term maintenance on a high-sucrose diet alleviates aging-induced sleep fragmentation in drosophila

Abstract: Sleep is a fundamental behavior in an animal’s life influenced by many internal and external factors, such as aging and diet. Critically, poor sleep quality places people at risk of serious medical conditions. Because aging impairs quality of sleep, measures to improve sleep quality for elderly people are needed. Given that diet can influence many aspects of sleep, we investigated whether a high-sucrose diet (HSD) affected aging-induced sleep fragmentation using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogast… Show more

“…The term ‘circadian rhythm’ refers to this physiological, 24-hour cycle that exhibits an endogenous and entrainable oscillation (Dibner et al 2010 ; Patke et al 2020 ). In vivo , circadian rhythms are mainly regulated by environmental signals such as light, food, and arousal stimuli (Lee and Kim 2021 ). Circadian rhythm is generated by the molecular clock system.…”

“…As flies age, their sleep patterns fragment and sleep quality drops. Chronic feeding of high sucrose in aged flies has no effect on reduction of age-induced sleep fragmentation, however a controlled short exposure to a high sucrose feed can rescue this phenotype ( 124 ), suppressing sleep fragmentation in aged flies for a short time period, highlighting that the feeding of different macronutrients may be used as a treatment for certain types of sleep disruption. The effect of dietary sugar on sleep behavior is independent of circadian rhythm ( 123 ), as it is conserved even in models where circadian rhythm is disrupted, indicating that it primarily acts on the homeostatic sleep process.…”

“…The genome of Drosophila contains about 13,600 genes, 60% homologous to the human genome ( Adams et al, 2000 ). Drosophila develop most major organs found in humans, including heart, hematopoietic system, and compartmented nervous system, thus serving as a useful simple model for studying circulation and behavior ( Lee and Kim, 2021 ; Rimal et al, 2020 ; Vlisidou and Wood, 2015 ).…”
