Short-term effects of self-massage combined with home exercise on pain, daily activity, and autonomic function in patients with myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome

Abstract: [Purpose] The aim of the present was to investigate the short-term effects of a program combining self-massage and home exercise for patients with myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPDS). [Subjects and Methods] In this retrospective study, 63 patients were allocated to the experimental (n = 32) and control (n = 31) groups. “…Although regular exercise can provide relief for chronic muscle pain conditions such as fibromyalgia [8,29,38] and myofascial pain [10], unaccustomed exercise may produce intense muscle pain [4,24] (for a review, see [37]). Indeed, muscle pain due to exertion is a major cause of limited compliance in exercise therapy, leading to a dropout rate of up to 44% in patients with fibromyalgia [8].…”

“…One of the most common instruments for self-MFR is foam roller [5][6][7][8] and roller massage [9][10][11][12][13]. Self-MFR increases flexibility, reduces delayed onset muscle soreness [14], adjusts arterial function and hemangioendothelial function [15], and adjusts autonomic nervous system [16] on the continuous basis.…”
