A utilização da terapia por meio do laser de Baixa Intensidade, caracteriza-se por sua multidisciplinariedade, pois seu uso, atualmente, ocorre por muitos profissionais de diversas áreas, como por exemplo, Fonoaudiólogos. Os profissionais da Fonoaudiologia já estão procurando utilizar esse método de terapia, em razão de ser não invasivo, ou seja, sem consequências tóxicos e colaterais, contribuindo de modo significativo nas terapias, por meio do estabelecimento de um prognóstico pautado na excelência do processo de reabilitação. O objetivo geral da presente pesquisa consiste em analisar quais as principais contribuições da laser terapia como um recurso em prol de terapia na Fonoaudiologia. Dentre os objetivos específicos ressaltam-se: definir laser terapia; identificar o papel do Fonoaudiólogo; verificar como a laser terapia pode ser utilizada pelos profissionais da Fonoaudiologia. A problemática consiste no seguinte questionamento: como a laser terapia pode auxiliar os profissionais da Fonoaudiologia em suas competências? Para fundamentar a pesquisa houve a necessidade de uma metodologia pautada em uma revisão bibliográfica ou literária analisando diversas fontes, como artigos, monografias, dissertações, livros e consultas em sites que disponibilizam trabalhos científicos, como a SCIELO e Google acadêmico, por exemplo. Infere-se que a pesquisa é pertinente, constatando-se os diversos benefícios da utilização da laser terapia pelos profissionais da Fonoaudiologia, como atuação na paralisia facial, disfagias, dentre outras.

There is also scientific evidence in the field of speech therapy on the effects of laser therapy associated with orofacial motor exercises, through a study of the association of these two modalities of intervention, with results that bring an important muscle balance, showing that this may be a new option in speech therapy 13 . Purpose: to know the profile of members of the Brazilian Association of Orofacial Motricity and their knowledge and interest on laser therapy in Orofacial Motricity. Methods: an online form was elaborated covering questions about the speech therapist’s profile, training, and acting, as well as his/her knowledge about the theories of laser therapy and its clinical application. The form was sent via e-mail to members of the Brazilian Association of Orofacial Motricity - ABRAMO, registered in the year 2015. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and the Spearman’s correlation test. Results: only 5 (19.2%) out of the 26 participants reported having contact with laser equipment, and of these, only 1 (3.8%) used it in his/her practice. Regarding knowledge of the method, only 2 (7.7%) were trained, and the majority, 14 speech therapists (53.8%), had an interest in acquiring knowledge on this subject. Speech therapists with a longer training period were unaware of laser therapy (p = 0.03) and did not agree on the use (p = 0.01), but claimed to be interested in the subject (p = 0.05). Conclusion: it was possible to verify that the interest in improvement and insertion in the clinical practice in laser therapy are realities for the research volunteers, but a very small number has the knowledge and makes use of the technique in their interventions.

Laser Therapy in the Management of Painful Temporomandibular Dysfunction: Scientific Evidence Low-intensity laser application has been described in the literature as an intervention proposal for cases of Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD), and scientific evidence-based action is key for a successful treatment. This research aims to identify in literature the effectiveness of laser therapy for the control of painful TMD in adults. A systematic literature review was carried out through specific search strategies tailored for each of the databases analyzed. The researcher used PICO on PubMed, Bireme, Embase, and Scopus databases by cross-referencing the descriptors from DeCS/MESH and random keywords. Clinical trials were included involving human subjects of both sexes, aged between 18 and 55 years old, who used either GaAs or AsGaAl (infrared) low-intensity laser as an intervention in the treatment of TMD. The studies included presented laser type, application parameters and settings, and the assessment tools for potential analysis of the results for the therapy protocols that were used, with independent and non-associated therapy. All participants diagnosed with painful TMD and Muscle Temporomandibular and/or Joint Dysfunction were included. Two independent reviewers selected the articles, then the data were organized by the researcher responsible for the project, and later the data were analyzed according to the information previously collected and organized. After excluding articles by reading their title and abstract and removing duplicates, 33 of those articles related to the topic were selected and, finally, five of those were chosen. The number of participants in the study ranged from 18 to 74 subjects. Amongst the five studies analyzed, three of them were conducted in Brazil. Two studies had more than one experimental group with different dosimetry in the laser application, and only one article presented another associated therapy. Regarding the TMD diagnosis, three articles used the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) as the assessment tool. The total number of sessions ranged from three to ten, with a weekly frequency of two to four times a week, which lasted from one to five weeks. Both device and dosimetry of the studies were different, but most studies presented continuous-wave laser. Only one article did not disclose such information. Application time in the experimental and placebo groups ranged from ten to sixty seconds. Four of the five articles used GaAlAs laser and one used GaAs laser. We could identify that, out of the five studies selected, four presented improvement in the painful symptoms through laser therapy and one showed results that were similar to the placebo group. However, due to the limited number of studies and variabilities in how results were assessed and presented, it was not possible to apply the statistical treatment (meta-analysis) to prove the effectiveness of laser therapy in adults with painful TMD.
