Recently, the identification and detection of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has become an essential issue under ASD intervention services. The high percentage of ASD among children requires preschool teachers to recognizse children’s abnormal development and identify them at an early stage, followed by referral to specialists. Therefore, this identification calls for a specific ability among preschool teachers, identified as knowledge, belief, identification skills, and self-efficacy (KBISSE). This conceptual framework aims to utilize the current literature to present a discussion on preschool teachers’ KBISSE in identifying children with ASD and making decisions to refer children suspected with ASD to specialists. The conceptual framework is discussed based on social cognitive theory (SCT) and the health belief model (HBM). The conceptual framework emphasizes the need for preschool teachers to be educated in ASD via an educational module that could increase teachers’ self-efficacy in identifying children with ASD. Besides, knowledge in ASD, belief in ASD, and identification skills are also necessary variables for building the educational module. The educational module is useful for guiding future research on preschool teachers’ identification of children with any disability, one of which is ASD, and subsequent specialist referral at an early stage.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social communication deficits and restricted or repetitive behaviors. Parental perceptions of the etiology of their child’s ASD can affect provider–client relationships, bonding between parents and their children, and the prognosis, treatment, and management of children with ASD. Thus, this study sought to examine the perceptions of ASD etiology of parents of children with ASD. Methods: Forty-two parents of children diagnosed with ASD were recruited across Texas. Semi-structured interviews were conducted individually. All interviews were recorded and later transcribed verbatim for content analysis utilizing NVivo 12.0 (QSR International, Doncaster, Australia). Results: The content analysis identified the following themes regarding parental perceptions of ASD etiology: Genetic factors (40.5%), environmental factors (31.0%), problems that occurred during pregnancy or delivery (23.8%), vaccinations (16.7%), other health problems (7.1%), parental age at the time of pregnancy (4.8%), and spiritual or religious factors (2.4%). Conclusions: The parental perceptions of ASD etiology were diverse, but several views, such as vaccinations and spiritual or religious factors, were not based on scientific evidence. Health professionals and researchers can use these findings to develop and provide targeted education to parents who have children with ASD. Our findings also support policymakers in developing campaigns designed to increase parental ASD awareness and knowledge.

Bu çalışma, Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Klinik Çalışmalar Etik Kurulu tarafından 08.04.2020 tarihinde 2020/55 karar numarası ile onaylanmıştır. Öz Amaç: Kompleks etiyolojisi ve çekirdek semptomlarına etkili bir tedavinin henüz olmaması nedeniyle birçok kültürde OSB'nin oluşum nedenlerine dair farklı görüşler bulunmaktadır.Bu çalışmada ailelerin OSB'nin nedenlerine ait görüşleri, tedavi seçimleri ve beklentilerinin araştırması amaçlanmıştır. Materyal ve Metot: Çalışmaya 2015-2019 yılları arasında Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Çocuk Psikiyatri kliniğine başvuran ve OSB tanısı olan çocukların aileleri dahil edilmiş olup veriler geriye dönük olarak taranmıştır. Kliniğimize başvuran her hasta için ailelere görüşme öncesinde "Ön Görüşme Formu" doldurtulmuş, bilgileri tam olan hastalar çalışmaya alınmıştır. Ön görüşme formunda çocuğun yaşı, cinsiyeti, daha önce aldığı tedavi, hastalığın ya da bozukluğun neden kaynaklandığı ve tedavi beklentisine dair sorular bulunmaktadır. Klinik global izlem-hastalık şiddeti çocuk psikiyatri uzmanı tarafından doldurulmuştur. Bulgular: Çalışma grubunda 241 çocuk ve bakım vereninin verisi incelenmiştir. Erkek ve kız hastaların klinik özellikleri, aile görüşleri ve çocuk psikiyatri uzmanı tarafından belirlenen hastalık şiddeti karşılaştırıldığında kız hastaların klinik global izlem puanlarının daha yüksek olduğu (p=0.022) ve "Çocuğun kendinden" şıkkının daha yüksek oranda işaretlendiği (p=0.014) gözlenmiştir. İki Adımlı Kümeleme Analizi sonrasında iki küme oluşmuş ve kümeler için en belirleyici özellik "Çocuğa ait nedenler" olmuştur. İki küme arasında "daha önce psikiyatrik muayene", "ilaç tedavisi" ve "yaş" özelliklerinin belirleyici olduğu gözlenmiştir. Sonuç: Ailenin tedavi seçiminde, otizmin oluşum nedenlerine ait görüşleri, bozukluğun süresi ve daha önce çocuğun görmüş olduğu psikiyatrik muayeneler etkili olmaktadır. Bu bulgular OSB ile ilgilenen klinisyenlerin ailelere rehberlik etme ve kararlarına yardımcı olması açısından önem taşımaktadır.
