Short health scale: A valid measure of health-related quality of life in Korean-speaking patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: AIMTo evaluate the short health scale (SHS), a new, simple, four-part visual analogue scale questionnaire that is designed to assess the impact of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) on health-related quality of life (HRQOL), in Korean-speaking patients with IBD.METHODSThe SHS was completed by 256 patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Individual SHS items were correlated with inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire (IBDQ) dimensions and with disease activity to assess validity. Test-ret… Show more

“…Sensitivity to change was assessed by examining changes in SHS scores in patients for whom disease activity changed during the time of the study. In previous validation studies of the SHS, this has also been done for the Korean [14] and Norwegian [16] versions. The Korean version, with a slightly smaller subset of patients with changed disease activity (n = 21), was not found to be sensitive to change.…”

“…Developed in Sweden, the SHS showed good reliability, validity, and responsiveness in both patients with UC and those with CD. 120,121 Some questions exist about its retest reliability. 122 English, 120 Danish, and Korean versions have been also developed.…”

“…122 English, 120 Danish, and Korean versions have been also developed. 121 Additionally, the scale has been studied in children with IBD. 123 However, the SHS showed similar properties in patients with irritable bowel syndrome, thus indicating that this scale is a more generic and not a disease-specific instrument.…”
