Short communication: Variation of total immunoglobulin G and β-lactoglobulin concentrations in colostrum and milk from Canadian Holsteins classified as high, average, or low immune responders

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate IgG and β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) concentrations in colostrum and milk of Canadian Holsteins (n=108) classified as high (H), average (A), or low (L) for antibody-mediated (AMIR) or cell-mediated immune responses (CMIR) based on estimated breeding values. It was hypothesized that H-AMIR and H-CMIR cows produce colostrum (first milking) and milk (d 5 postcalving) with higher concentrations of IgG and β-LG. Data for IgG and β-LG in colostrum and milk were analyzed independ… Show more

“…Lactoferrin and immunoglobulin G concentrations were positively correlated in all milk samples, which correspond to the findings of other authors [5]. This means that cows with high lactoferrin concentrations have high immunoglobulin G concentrations.…”

“…High immune responding cows have also been found to have an increased response to commercial E. coli J5 mastitis vaccination ( 117 ), as well as improved colostrum quality as measured by specific antibody ( 117 ), total immunoglobulin, lactoferrin, and β-lactoglobulin ( 118 ). Differences in leukocyte populations between high and low immune responders have also been described, such that cows with superior antibody responses have a higher proportion of B cells in peripheral blood in response to immunization, whereas cows with high cell-mediated responses have a higher baseline proportion of gamma delta (γδ) T cells ( 119 ).…”

“…However, the mechanisms by which whey protein or any specific part of whey protein contributes immune modulation have not yet been elucidated. Whey protein is comprised of several immune enhancing components, including lactoferrin and LG, which can modulate immune responses [1, 34, 35]. In this study, we aimed to use hybridoma cells as a model to investigate the functional role of LG as a stimulator of cell proliferation.…”
