Fifteen countries, based on geographical representation, Interbull membership, and size of progeny testing programs, provided a brief description of national selection index and top bull listings from August 2003. Individual traits included in each selection index were grouped into 3 components as they related to production, durability, and health and reproduction. The relative emphasis for each component within the selection index, as well as the number of common bulls among top listings were compared across countries. Average relative emphasis for production, durability, and health and reproduction, across all countries, was 59.5, 28, and 12.5%, respectively. The main difference between selection indices in various countries was the relative emphasis on production. Overall, the Danish S-Index had the most balanced emphasis across the 3 components, with 34% on production, 29% on durability, and 37% on health and reproduction. Broadening of breeding goals through recent changes to selection indices decreased the similarities of top bull listings across the various countries, with a slightly greater commonality among sires of top bulls.
Over the past 100 yr, the range of traits considered for genetic selection in dairy cattle populations has progressed to meet the demands of both industry and society. At the turn of the 20th century, dairy farmers were interested in increasing milk production; however, a systematic strategy for selection was not available. Organized milk performance recording took shape, followed quickly by conformation scoring. Methodological advances in both genetic theory and statistics around the middle of the century, together with technological innovations in computing, paved the way for powerful multitrait analyses. As more sophisticated analytical techniques for traits were developed and incorporated into selection programs, production began to increase rapidly, and the wheels of genetic progress began to turn. By the end of the century, the focus of selection had moved away from being purely production oriented toward a more balanced breeding goal. This shift occurred partly due to increasing health and fertility issues and partly due to societal pressure and welfare concerns. Traits encompassing longevity, fertility, calving, health, and workability have now been integrated into selection indices. Current research focuses on fitness, health, welfare, milk quality, and environmental sustainability, underlying the concentrated emphasis on a more comprehensive breeding goal. In the future, on-farm sensors, data loggers, precision measurement techniques, and other technological aids will provide even more data for use in selection, and the difficulty will lie not in measuring phenotypes but rather in choosing which traits to select for.
The objective of this research was to estimate heritabilities of milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and lactose in the first 3 parities and their genetic relationships with milk, fat, protein, and SCS in Canadian Holsteins. Data were a random sample of complete herds (60,645 test day records of 5,022 cows from 91 herds) extracted from the edited data set, which included 892,039 test-day records of 144,622 Holstein cows from 4,570 herds. A test-day animal model with multiple-trait random regression and the Gibbs sampling method were used for parameter estimation. Regression curves were modeled using Legendre polynomials of order 4. A total of 6 separate 4-trait analyses, which included MUN, lactose, or both (yield or percentage) with different combinations of production traits (milk, fat and protein yield, fat and protein percentages, and somatic cell score) were performed. Average daily heritabilities were moderately high for MUN (from 0.384 to 0.414), lactose kilograms (from 0.466 to 0.539), and lactose percentage (from 0.478 to 0.508). Lactose yield was highly correlated with milk yield (0.979). Lactose percentage and MUN were not genetically correlated with milk yield. However, lactose percentage was significantly correlated with somatic cell score (-0.202). The MUN was correlated with fat (0.425) and protein percentages (0.20). Genetic correlations among parities were high for MUN, lactose percentage, and yield. Estimated breeding values (EBV) of bulls for MUN were correlated with fat percentage EBV (0.287) and EBV of lactose percentage were correlated with lactation persistency EBV (0.329). Correlations between lactose percentage and MUN with fertility traits were close to zero, thus diminishing the potential of using those traits as possible indicators of fertility.
The 305-d yield records of 1,048,942 Italian Holstein-Friesian heifers were used to determine the effect of age at first calving on milk yield and fat and protein concentration. Research showed that there is a positive effect of age at first calving on milk yield and fat percentage and a negative effect on protein percentage. In six scenarios of milk price and rearing costs (2 x 3, respectively), the effect of age at first calving on the difference between milk yield returns and rearing costs was calculated. We concluded that the most positive difference was achieved with age at first calving between 23 and 24 mo.
The aim of this study was to explore the impact of type traits on the functional survival of Canadian Holstein cows using a Weibull proportional hazards model. The data set consisted of 1,130,616 registered cows from 13,606 herds calving from 1985 to 2003. Functional survival was defined as the number of days from first calving to culling, death, or censoring. Type information consisted of phenotypic type scores for 8 composite traits (with 18 classes of each) and 23 linear descriptive traits (with 9 classes of each). The statistical model included the effects of stage of lactation, season of production, the annual change in herd size, type of milk recording supervision, age at first calving, effects of milk, fat and protein yields calculated within herd-year-parity deviations, herd-year-season of calving, each type trait, and the sire. Analysis was done one at a time for each of 31 type traits. The relative culling risk was calculated for animals in each class after accounting for the previously mentioned effects. Among the composite type traits with the greatest contribution to the likelihood function were final score, mammary system, and feet and legs, all having a strong relationship with functional survival. Cows with low scores for these traits had higher risk of culling compared with higher scores. For instance, cows classified as poor plus 1 vs. excellent plus 1 have a relative risk of culling 3.66 and 0.28, respectively. The corresponding figures for mammary system are 4.19 and 0.46 and for feet and legs are 2.34 and 0.50. Linear type traits with the greatest contribution to the likelihood function were fore udder attachment, udder texture, udder depth, rear udder attachment height, and rear udder attachment width. Stature and size had no strong relationship with functional survival.
Mastitis is one of the most prevalent and costly diseases in the dairy industry with losses attributable to reduced milk production, discarded milk, early culling, veterinary services, and labor costs. Typically, mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland most often, but not limited to, bacterial infection, and is characterized by the movement of leukocytes and serum proteins from the blood to the site of infection. It contributes to compromised milk quality and the potential spread of antimicrobial resistance if antibiotic treatment is not astutely applied. Despite the implementation of management practises and genetic selection approaches, bovine mastitis control continues to be inadequate. However, some novel genetic strategies have recently been demonstrated to reduce mastitis incidence by taking advantage of a cow’s natural ability to make appropriate immune responses against invading pathogens. Specifically, dairy cattle with enhanced and balanced immune responses have a lower occurrence of disease, including mastitis, and they can be identified and selected for using the high immune response (HIR) technology. Enhanced immune responsiveness is also associated with improved response to vaccination, increased milk, and colostrum quality. Since immunity is an important fitness trait, beneficial associations with longevity and reproduction are also often noted. This review highlights the genetic regulation of the bovine immune system and its vital contributions to disease resistance. Genetic selection approaches currently used in the dairy industry to reduce the incidence of disease are reviewed, including the HIR technology, genomics to improve disease resistance or immune response, as well as the Immunity+™ sire line. Improving the overall immune responsiveness of cattle is expected to provide superior disease resistance, increasing animal welfare and food quality while maintaining favorable production levels to feed a growing population.
Metabolic disorders are disturbances to one or more of the metabolic processes in dairy cattle. Dysfunction of any of these processes is associated with the manifestation of metabolic diseases or disorders. In this review, data recording, incidences, genetic parameters, predictors, and status of genetic evaluations were examined for (1) ketosis, (2) displaced abomasum, (3) milk fever, and (4) tetany, as these are the most prevalent metabolic diseases where published genetic parameters are available. The reported incidences of clinical cases of metabolic disorders are generally low (less than 10% of cows are recorded as having a metabolic disease per herd per year or parity/lactation). Heritability estimates are also low and are typically less than 5%. Genetic correlations between metabolic traits are mainly positive, indicating that selection to improve one of these diseases is likely to have a positive effect on the others. Furthermore, there may also be opportunities to select for general disease resistance in terms of metabolic stability. Although there is inconsistency in published genetic correlation estimates between milk yield and metabolic traits, selection for milk yield may be expected to lead to a deterioration in metabolic disorders. Under-recording and difficulty in diagnosing subclinical cases are among the reasons why interest is growing in using easily measurable predictors of metabolic diseases, either recorded on-farm by using sensors and milk tests or off-farm using data collected from routine milk recording. Some countries have already initiated genetic evaluations of metabolic disease traits and currently most of these use clinical observations of disease. However, there are opportunities to use clinical diseases in addition to predictor traits and genomic information to strengthen genetic evaluations for metabolic health in the future.
Genetic diversity in livestock populations is a significant contributor to the sustainability of animal production. Also, genetic diversity allows animal production to become more responsive to environmental changes and market demands. The loss of genetic diversity can result in a plateau in production and may also result in loss of fitness or viability in animal production. In this study, we investigated the rate of inbreeding (ΔF), rate of coancestry (Δf), and effective population size (N e ) as important quantitative indicators of genetic diversity and evaluated the effect of the recent implementation of genomic selection on the loss of genetic diversity in North American Holstein and Jersey dairy cattle. To estimate the rate of inbreeding and coancestry, inbreeding and coancestry coefficients were calculated using the traditional pedigree method and genomic methods estimated from segment-and marker-based approaches. Furthermore, we estimated N e from the rate of inbreeding and coancestry and extent of linkage disequilibrium. A total of 205,755 and 89,238 pedigreed and genotyped animals born between 1990 and 2018 inclusively were available for Holsteins and Jerseys, respectively. The estimated average pedigree inbreeding coefficients were 7.74 and 7.20% for Holsteins and Jerseys, respectively. The corresponding values for the segment and markerby-marker genomic inbreeding coefficients were 13.61, 15.64, and 31.40% for Holsteins and 21.16, 22.54, and 42.62% for Jerseys, respectively. The average coancestry coefficients were 8.33 and 15.84% for Holsteins and 9.23 and 23.46% for Jerseys with pedigree and genomic measures, respectively. Generation interval for the whole 29-yr time period averaged approximately 5 yr for all selection pathways combined. The ΔF per generation based on pedigree, segment, and marker-bymarker genomic measures for the entire 29-yr period was estimated to be 0.75, 1.10, 1.16, and 1.02% for Holstein animals and 0.67, 0.62, 0.63, and 0.59% for Jersey animals, respectively. The Δf was estimated to be 0.98 and 0.98% for Holsteins and 0.73 and 0.78% for Jerseys with pedigree and genomic measures, respectively. These ΔF and Δf translated to an N e that ranged from 43 to 66 animals for Holsteins and 64 to 85 animals for Jerseys. In addition, the N e based on linkage disequilibrium was 58 and 120 for Holsteins and Jerseys, respectively. The 10-yr period that involved the application of genomic selection resulted in an increased ΔF per generation with ranges from 1.19 to 2.06% for pedigree and genomic measures in Holsteins. Given the rate at which inbreeding is increasing after the implementation of genomic selection, there is a need to implement measures and means for controlling the rate of inbreeding per year, which will help to manage and maintain farm animal genetic resources.
