Short Communication Association of ATP1A1 gene polymorphism with heat tolerance traits in dairy cattle

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Heat stress produces oxidative stress and affects the alternation of plasma K + and Na + . Since Na + ,K + -ATPase is sensitive to oxidative stress and critical for maintaining the homeostasis of these two ions, we examined the genetic polymorphism of the ATP1A1 gene in 160 Holstein cows using polymerase chain reaction low ionic strength single-strand conformation polymorphism and DNA sequencing methods. G to A at position -14103 in exon 14 and C to T at position -14242 in intron 14 of the bovine ATP… Show more

“…Mutations in the intron region of the IGF2 gene are closely related to muscle and fat deposit (Knoll et al, 2000;Liu et al, 2003). Liu et al (2010) found a C to T variation in intron 14 of the bovine ATP1A1 gene, and they also found significant correlations between the ATP1A1 gene polymorphism and the coefficient of heat tolerance. In this study, we found that all four SNPs in the bovine Insig-1 gene exist in the intron region, which may affect the economic traits by affecting the translation efficiency of Insig-1 itself.…”

“…The least-squares mean of each genotype was estimated, and differences between genotypes were analyzed using the Bonferroni test (Schenkel et al 2006). The model (Liu et al 2010) was: Y ij = μ + G i + e ij , where Y ij are the observed values of different egg traits, μ is the population mean, G i are the effects of individual genotypes, and e ij is the effect of random error.…”

“…Slick-haired crossbred calves of Carora (Brown Swiss 3 Venezuelan Criollo breed) and Holstein had lower RT compared with normal-haired contemporaries (0.188C to 0.48C). Liu et al (2010) investigated an ATP1A1 gene polymorphism in six genotypes. The heterozygous AC genotype showed the highest heat tolerance coefficient and lowest respiration rate, and therefore was the most favourable at the ATP1A1-P14 locus for the anti-heat stress trait in the population.…”
