Pogostemon cablin Benth also known as a patchouli plant, is a member of Lamiaceae family, and the source of patchouli essential oil. This plant is an important herb which possesses many therapeutic properties. In traditional medicinal practices, patchouli oil is used to relieve depression, stress, calm nerves, control appetite and to improve sexual interest. Up to the present moment, almost 200 volatile and non-volatile compounds have been isolated and identified from Pogostemon cablin including flavonoid, phytosterols, glycosides, terpenes, sesquiterpenes, organic acids, and others. Modern studies revealed that the patchouli plant have been used for various applications such as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antidepressant, antithrombotic, antiplatelet, fibrinolytic, antiemetic, antimutagenic, and aphrodisiac. In aromatherapy, this plant is believed to be able to improve blood circulation and sexual interest. The flavonoid compounds, such as acacetin and apigenin are believed to play an important role as an aphrodisiac. The mechanisms of action of this plant as an aphrodisiac is believed by increasing androgens and estrogen levels in dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which further increases arousal sexual desire. However, some uses need to be verified and may require standardizing and authenticating the bioactivity of purified compounds through scientific methods. This perspective study discusses the aphrodisiac potential of Pogostemon cablin Benth, including their chemical constituents, health benefit, mechanism action, and the role of main bioactive compound as an aphrodisiac.

A Keiki is the product of asexual propagation which naturally develop at the node of a flower stalk or cane. Phalaenopsis produce Keiki along the middle to end nodes on the flower stalk. Although keikis are an inefficient way to propagate orchids on a commercial scale, it is interesting to study the cytokinin hormone Benzyl Aminopurine (BAP) effect to stimulate keikis on a node along the flower stalk. Two nodes of each flower stalk were used in this experiment. Cytokinin hormone (0 mg L−1 , 2 000 mg L−1 , 4 000 mg L−1 , 6 000 mg L−1 BAP) was only applied once to the second, third, fourth, and fifth nodes of the flower stalk base. The Keiki raised from the second and third nodes of the flower stalk while the flower spike raised from the fourth to sixth basal. BAP stimulated bud break on the node of the flower stalk and could produce either flower spike or keikis depending on node position from the basal node of the flower stalk.

Objective: Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is global pandemic which caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. Mechanism of infection is initiated by attachment between viral glycoprotein with ACE2 receptor in human cells. Furthermore, Indonesia had a massive diversity of plants with a high potency of drugs, such as Pogostemon cablin Benth. In brief, it contained of various volatile compounds with many therapeutic properties. Therefore, this research aimed to identify the ability of volatile compounds from Pogostemon cablin Benth as a potential inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein. Methods: SMILE notation of 22 volatile compounds of Pogostemon cablin Benth were collected from PubChem and the 3D structure of SARS-CoV-2 glycoprotein (PDB ID: 6VXX) was obtained from PDB database. Simulation of interaction between volatile compound and glycoprotein was conducted by using Pyrx molecular docking. Moreover, the complex of compounds-glycoprotein was depicted by using Chimera and the amino acid residue was analysed by using LigPlot. Selected potential compounds were identified for biological activity prediction, drug-likeness, and toxicity analysis. Results: Analysis showed that among those volatile compounds, only caryophyllene oxide (-6.3 kcal/mol) naturally bind specific into RBD site as compared to the control. Furthermore, it had comparable hydrogen and hydrophobic interactions with glycoprotein. Further analysis showed it has strong potential biological function for antiviral with low toxicity. Conclusion: Caryophyllene oxide is considered as promising candidate compounds that inhibited viral infection through SARS-CoV-2 glycoprotein.
