Shear Bond Strength and Bracket Base Morphology of New and Rebonded Orthodontic Ceramic Brackets

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to (1) to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of two ceramic brackets when new and when rebonded following various bracket base conditioning methods, and (2) to determine bond failure mode relative to bracket base morphology. 100 Symetri ClearTM (SC) and 100 Radiance Plus® (RP) ceramic brackets were bonded to bovine incisors and divided into five groups: one group served as controls and four had brackets rebonded following conditioning by: no surface treatment, sealant, san… Show more

“…Orthodontic brackets are categorized as metal or ceramic brackets. Ceramic brackets were developed to meet the demand for improved aesthetics ( Urichianu et al, 2022 ). Despite their aesthetic appeal, ceramic brackets exhibit lower bond strength to enamel, acrylic, and porcelain surfaces compared to traditional metal brackets ( Pinho et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The ARI scores only indicate adhesive and cohesive failures at the enamel-bracket interface and are not related to SBS scores; therefore, the strength of the tooth enamel surface is not the only factor that determines which adhesive will adhere better to the enamel surface, but the surface strength of the bracket base is also decisive. 25,26 ARI scores of 4 and 5 are clinically advantageous in the debonding process because this means less adhesive adhering to the tooth, resulting in easier and faster removal and minimum destruction. 27,28 This study can conclude that desensitizing agents were able to increase the SBS of the orthodontic metal bracket post-in-office bleaching, with fluoride-based desensitizing agents having better SBS than non-fluoridebased desensitizing agents.…”

“…Oral hygiene, orthodontic bonding technique, and nutrition are the factors determining the development of dental erosion during orthodontic treatment [ 11 , 22 , 23 ]. It is a matter of complex interaction between the enamel surface and bracket towards the adhesive layer.…”
