Shaping ability of ProTaper NEXT, ProTaper Universal and iRace files in simulated S‐shaped canals

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the shaping ability of three nickel-titanium endodontic file systems by comparing three parameters: canal deviation, apical foramen position and instrumentation time. A glide path was established in 30 simulated S-shaped canal blocks that were randomly assigned into three groups (n = 10): ProTaper Universal, ProTaper NEXT and iRace. Each group was instrumented per its manufacturer's directions. Pre- and postoperative images were superimposed to determine any canal deviati… Show more

“…Deviation of the root canals was determined according to the study by Hiranus et al (11). The distance between the canal wall on pre-and post-operation images was measured at 1 mm intervals on both the mesial and distal sides of the canal.…”

“…Protaper Universal (DentsplyMaillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) system was used as a benchmark system for comparison; as it often serves as a golden standard to which new file systems are compared (8-11). The null hypothesis was that there would be no significant differences in terms of canal straightening, centering ability and preparation time between the tested NiTi rotary file systems.…”

“…This drawback will be resolved by use of a direct resin composite restoration after root canal treatment for a class IV cavity (23), which includes both the incisal edge and the proximal surface, with a high (90%) estimated overall success rate after 10 years (24). Further, the presence of enamel at the cavity margin affords an opportunity for long-term clinical success of a restoration due to durable and reliable resin-enamel bonds (2527). Thus, the ISA outline approximates the incisal edge and creates thin enamel, although it is likely to have little impact on failure of restoration after root canal treatment.…”

“…[16] However, these simulated resin canals allow direct visual comparison of the shaping ability of tested endodontic instruments and have thus been widely used to demonstrate differences in the performance of instruments under standardized conditions. [1011131517]…”
