Shape-Morphing Space Frame (SMSF) Using Linear Bistable Elements

Abstract: This paper presents a new concept: a Shape-Morphing Space Frame (SMSF), which is a novel application utilizing the Linear Bistable Compliant Crank-Slider Mechanism (LBCCSM). The frame’s initial shape is constructed from a single-layer grid of flexures, rigid links and LBCCSMs. The grid is bent into the space frame’s initial cylindrical shape, which can morph because of the inclusion of LBCCSMs in its structure. The design parameters consist of the frame’s initial height, its tessellation pattern (including bis… Show more

“…We designed a two-dimensional periodic structure using the bistable structure of Alqasimi [29] and the flexure hinge of Schotborgh et al [33], as shown in Figure 3. The red line in the figure shows the bistable structure of Alqasimi et al [29] and the flexure hinge of Schotborgh et al [33]. The red dashed line connects the midpoint of the edge AB (CD) and the vertex Q (P').…”

“…To experimentally verify the bistability, it is sufficient to show that a mechanism has two configurations which it will hold while being perturbed (i.e., being shaken, turned upside down, etc.) Alqasimi et al demonstrated a shape-morphing space frame using a linear bistable compliant crank-slider mechanism [22] that is arranged in a specific pattern to produce a shape-changing structure [23]. Bistable shape-shifting surfaces can produce morphing structures with a line-of-sight integrity, i.e., effectiveness as a physical barrier [24].…”
