Shape Memory Behavior of Novel (l-Lactide−Glycolide−Trimethylene Carbonate) Terpolymers

Abstract: Bioresorbable new terpolymers of l-lactide, glycolide, and trimethylene carbonate with different compositions were synthesized via ring-opening polymerization reaction of the cyclic monomers using low-toxicity zirconium(IV) acetylacetonate as initiator. The thermal and mechanical properties were investigated by means of thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, stress−strain measurements, and dynamical mechanical analysis. The glass transition temperature of the terpolymers changes with composition … Show more

“…Biodegradable G-Cap and G-Cap-L polymers releasing ciprofloxacin were synthesized in the Center of Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Zabrze. Polymers were obtained by ring opening polymerization using non-toxic coordination initiator zirconium acetylacetonate Zr(acac) 4 [6,23]. Biodegradable polymeric coatings of G-Cap and G-Cap-L type were applied to metal implants by dip coating.…”

“…As T trans (= 37°C)>T g (= 22°C) was used for shaping (elongation to 150%), and fixing occurred T = 0°C [15]. Several works were devoted to synthesize terpolymers composed of trimethylene carbonate, L-lactide and glycolide (PTMC-LLA-GA) [16].…”

“…Consequently, they require harsh temperatures to fix temporary shape (<0°C) (3,(6)(7)(8) or trigger shape recovery (>70°C) that is often slow and incomplete (9)(10)(11). Moreover, few existing SMPs possess tunable biofunctionalizability and adequate mechanical strength at body temperature (12).…”
