“…These folds extend along the continental shelf of the Alboran Sea deforming up to Holocene sediments . Kilometer-size folds interact with subordinated NW-SE to WNW-ESE normal faults of variable scale that frequently deform the Quaternary sediments with associated seismicity (Sanz de Galdeano et al, 1995;Galindo Zaldívar et al, 2009;Marín-Lechado et al, 2006;Alfaro et al, 2007).…”

“…Seismotectonic studies in the Gibraltar Arc indicate fault regimes that vary from normal to thrust faulting, with large strike‐slip faults affecting sectors of the Betics and Rif [e.g., Galindo‐Zaldívar et al , 1993; Buforn et al , 1995; López Casado et al , 2001; Stich et al , 2003]. These structures are thought to control most of the deformation in the southeastern Betics and East Alboran Basin during the Neogene [e.g., Andreux et al , 1971; Bousquet , 1979; Leblanc and Olivier , 1984; Weijermars , 1987; de Larouzière et al , 1988; Montenat , 1990; Sanz de Galdeano , 1990; Cloetingh et al , 1992; Montenat and Ott D'Estevou , 1995; Sanz de Galdeano et al , 1995; Morel and Meghraoui , 1996; Alvarez‐Marrón , 1999]. Some segments of these strike‐slip faults show evidence of active faulting during the Quaternary [e.g., Keller et al , 1995; Bell et al , 1997; Reicherter and Reiss , 2001; Faulkner et al , 2003; Martínez‐Díaz and Hernández‐Enrile , 2004; Masana et al , 2004; Gràcia et al , 2006].…”

“…Iberia and Africa converge at a very slow rate, 4.5–5.6 mm/yr [ Argus et al , 1989; DeMets et al , 1990, 1994; Kiratzi and Papazachos , 1995; McClusky et al , 2003; Pondrelli , 1999] through a diffuse collisional plate boundary. The width of this boundary has been defined by its seismicity and recent deformation [ McKenzie , 1972; López et al , 1987; Buforn et al , 1995; López et al , 1995; Sanz de Galdeano et al , 1995; Meghraoui et al , 1996]. The area under deformation is 1500 km wide in some parts and includes the Betics, the Pyrenees, the Rif‐Tell, and the Atlas Mountains with the Alboran sea between the Betics and the Rif‐Tell (Figure 1).…”
